Cleaning out the tank and pipes.

Puraclean for me. If Truma advise against a Milton type fluid why would you use it when other alternatives are available?

...and at £8 for 400gms which will cover at least 2 complete sterilisations it seems like a no brainer to me tbh.

I use Elsan Fresh Water Tank Cleaner, £7.99 for 1litre, which will do me two cleans.

I have always used coca-cola I just put 5lta bottle into the tank drive around for 25 minuets then flush it out with clean water never had any problems with it.

I dont think it`s really the issue of the steralisation. It`s more about useing the wrong product that can damage pumps, hot water heater tank internals and seals. Puriclean (and others) is an approved product which apparently wont affect any of the above adversely and I am no scientist so thats what I always use.

I find that’s great for grey waste tanks, but perhaps it would taint water tanks,

Yes Im sure it may clean but certainly not sterilise and kill any nasty micro bugs.

That looks even simpler than the puriclean.

I suppose the only down side is that it says to leave it overnight whereas the puriclean can be sorted in hours.

We tend to use bottled water for drinks etc so the tank water is for washing and flushing and carrying the extra water means longer between pitstops. I follow the same procedures as I do with our domestic system at home - I leave it to the water treatment works plus I do a drain down after most trips. As I understand it most nasties need light and or heat to grow. The water in my van does not seen the light of day until it comes out of the taps.

My main concern is the shower head. I make sure water goes through it every couple of days so that the Legionella bugs don't get a chance to grow, particularly in warmer weather.

We use 'straight from the tap' water here too except for boiling water for a brew.

I'm not losing sleep over it tbh. Before we moved to west Wales the previous dealer I used for my hab checks did a clean and flush for me for a nominal fee. The local dealer surprisingly doesn't offer this service so I thought I'd do it myself as the MH is 3 years old now.

Mrs GMJ has a lowered immune system and tends to pick up stomach bugs etc and as its her who uses the shower on board I thought I'd give it a go.

That situation alone make a belt and braces approach totally understandable. :)

The safest and most economical is to buy a gallon of white vinegar on Ebay and that will clean pipes and the heater and descale kettles. Fantastic for cleaning just like your granny used.

Resurrecting an old thread AFTER applying the Puriclean powder according to the instructions, so too late now .... No idea if the fresh water tank has ever been sterilised [paperwork that came with Brunhilde suggests that the Hab Checks were done but little/nothing else], but Puriclean instructions say to leave the mixed solution in the Tank for up to 12 hours before rinsing. It seems that any longer and the bacterial film that the Puriclean removes from the Tank sides will begin to reattach itself, effectively wasting the money and effort. Assuming that the Tank has never been sterilised [and it certainly hasn't been cleaned at the beginning and end of each season as Puriclean recommend], I would have liked to leave the solution onboard for the 12 hours. The daylight reduction today means that I will just about get 6 hours of soaking, including the sink and shower taps before flushing the system with fresh water. I will have enough Puriclean powder for a 2nd application for 1/2 tank at the recommended strength or the full tank at 1/2 strength in say 2 weeks time, giving the system another 6 hours cleansing [could only get 2 x 100g tubs locally]. Any thoughts/recommendations/scientific explanations will be welcomed with open arms and closed taps ...

As a postscript, my brand new, unused Silicon Bucket is now thoroughly sterilised, as is the filler hose and the 5 Litre water carrier. And the main bathroom in the flat smells like a swimming pool [but without the urine, obviously....]

I still have to descale the Water Heater and wash going to use a 10% Cider Vinegar solution as Truma Technical Support recommend. But Puriclean offer a DScale product that is guaranteed safe, without fear of seals leaking after treatment, and less likely to leave Brunhilde stinking like a chippie. Waiting for Puriclean to reply to yesterday's email re product availability and dosage recommendations etc

I never leave mine for the full 12 hours Steve tbh. Haven't died yet :D

Do you drink the water from your on board fresh water tanks? We only use it for washing, showering and dishes. If you don't drink it then I think you will have probably covered it with the one cleansing tbh but no problem with a 'belt and braces' approach though.

One thing which you may well have covered but I decant the sterilized water into my grey tank and leave it in there for a few hours so it gives that a bit of a clean too.

Thanks, Graham. Good tip about the grey water tank. I'll leave that overnight for a clean; although we do tend to use a separate bowl for the washing up water so that it can be emptied immediately after the Grey Tank began to stink to high heaven!

We always decant into a flexible bucket and dispose of it appropriately so no tank niffs for us either. The only thing that can niff is the plug holes but a good dose of Mr Muscle sink unblocker every now and then, sorts that.

Unsurprisingly, I take a more cautious approach! I top up the water in the sink and shower traps [have to do the same with our French hovel!] and, periodically [i.e. when I remember or the smells recur], I flush some warm water solution mixed with washing up liquid and then rinse through with fresh water

We did have a wee scare on a French Aire in August where there was a common tap for both fresh water and black water disposal. Suspect that another m/homer was a tad careless with the hygiene and one of us [not me] had 48 hours of seeing how quickly the cassette could be filled  Almost quicker than I could empty it ...
