Data only sim

I tether my ipad to my phone, but Three warned me that if I did that I would not get a warning just before data ran out, so could potentially end up with a large bill. I'm on a monthly contract.
I recently got a new THREE contract and one of the options I got when I registered on-line was an option to chose how much I was willing to pay over and above the contract (including choosing a £Zero amount).
Might be worth looking at this as maybe a new account feature?

I have unlimited data on my three phone that I tether my devices too, but I only have an allowance of 19gb in Europe. As backup I bought the 30 day Vodaphone data SIM on a rolling monthly contract, I use it is a mifi device, it costs me £30 a month for 50gb of data that you can use in the EU without restrictions, you needs to give 30 days notice to cancel it. I have used it with my firestick all over Portugal and Spain, it is far superior to three for speed and I get 4g speed with it were as I only seem to get 3g with three.

Ref the Firesticks, you can change the settings to control how much data each hour of viewing typically uses and in data saving mode it is very low but the quality does not seem that affected. Might be worth checking out if not looked already? But might be an option on the newer Fire Sticks as I have noticed that can't be set on a couple of the Sticks I have.

I do this Sue and I have had text alerts when getting near my limit? You can check anyway if you put the My3 app on your phone

We had a 3 data sim in our mifi last year while in Spain and Portugal, but was fed up of being limited to 12gb. So this year we have a 50gb Vodafone in our mifi, I also have 3 sim in my phone and iPad but only 10gb of data and my wife has EE in her phone. So far travelling through to Greece all has been fine, in fact we have been surprised how good the service has been.

Just saw this today 24 mth 3 contract mobile unlimited broad band £22 a month with free included router

http://www.three.co.uk/Store/Mobile_Broadband
Now that isa find, I have been um and ahing about home broadband for quite a while now. We have been enabled for fibre to the premises but very limited on who can/will provide and cheapest is £54 a month at the moment. Ordinary ADSl with line rental is costing me £36 and I can bring that down to £29 if I change provider and take longer contract. Been waiting as I want to sell house this year.

This is cheaper still and faster than anything we could get in the sticks here for less than £60 a month. Thanks for posting that I need to have a good look as it’s much better than the EE Home Broadband dongle offer

Are you sure THREE is good in your area? I have recently taken out the THREE £20 a month unlimited contract to use in my MiFi, but I have no 4G in my area with THREE, just 3G.
As it is for mobile use in the van, I am not that bothered, but if for home use it would be a bit slow.

It does seem like Home Broadband via mobile is the way of the future.

Well I thought so I am giving up home broad band when my contract expires as we are away for 7 or 8 mths a year and still have to pay for home B/B whether using it or not. The router which comes with this offer works off 12v thru a plug adaptor so can be powered direct from the vans 12v electric supply

Mine arrives tomorrow and I am doing exactly the same, won’t matter when I sell the house now, as if we moved to Hull they only allow Kingston Comminications so I would get charges for cancelling.

Yes I get a Three 4g signal as home Dave, when I ended up with no ADSL last switch over we tethered everything to my mobile which I placed in the window and was much faster than the copper

I was told at our 3 shop not to take to much notice of phone signal as mobile broad band works on the lower freq band which phones don't necessarily connect to. At home our 3 phone signal isn't great but the mifi with a 3 data sim seems to work well proving this to be correct

Their map shows no 4G. I haven't used the SIM in a phone, but with it in my mifi, I am only at 3G connection as predicted. (SKY SIM in the same MiFi is 4G and 10x the speed)

Best SIM card deal I have found is a Simyo. Available in Spain but can be used anywhere in the EU including Uk for the moment. It piggybacks off Orange Es so good coverage. It costs 17 euros for 25 gbs.

I have a Simyo, on their 30Gb for 28€ (IIRC). Haven't actually used it in a while tbh as I'm doing ok with a 10Gb sim in my phone, and a 15Gb data only sim in the mifi, both from EE.

Does anyone know if you can use a phone SIM in a mifi ( huawei 5577) as I thought it would not work? Can't remember where I read it though but think it was that the provider recognised the device and blocked it if not a phone?
I've had no problems doing that

I’m going to need a new sim for my wifi. Touring France, Spain and Portugal. Spending the bulk of my time in Spain.
Can anyone recommend a data only SIM card supplier. My Brit one . reduces data from 24 gb to 12 when used abroad , cheers
Be aware that the UK government has just (very quietly) announced that free EU roaming will NOT continue in the case of a no-deal brexit. They have acquiesced to the phone companies who said it would cost too much. If there is a deal, I don't know what happens but it doesn't look good.

But Three were the only company, before free roaming, to do their "Feel at home" or similar. Let's hope that would come back.

If you will be in a country for more than a week or two, then you would get better value for money buying a local data SIM card.

It depends on how much data you need and over what period, but I'd suggest that the better PAYG data SIM deals for France, Spain and Portugal at present are:

France
Free Mobile “Forfait Free”, 100GB over 1 rolling month for €19.99

Spain
Lycamobile Ilimitado XXL, 25GB over 30 days for €15. Buy in phone shops and supermarkets. Top up online (in English)

Portugal
MEO "Enjoy", 30GB over 15 days for €15. Buy in phone shops and MEO stores. Top up in MEO stores and post offices.

I can confirm this, in the van I normally tether to my phone if it has a good enough signal. If not I turn on my 5577C that has a Three data sim fitted and normally get a signal okay. An exception I did find so far was over at Burrowhead near Wigtown in Newton Stewart. My works EE phone also had no EE signal but on return I noticed that had a text saying welcome to Manx something or other so they have a roaming agreement.

+1 For Simyo - I did a lot of research and it came up tops. It's the best I could find in Spain, roams (and tethers) faultlessly and their website is OK - chrome auto-translate handles it pretty well. It has a decent display of how much you have used. Only slight issue is that you can't top-up online with a non Spanish credit/debit card. You either buy credit in shops and supermarkets, or I found it easier to use a third party service called Ding (there are others) which takes a tiny cut, but you can use your UK cards and the credit appears on Simyo within minutes. Their online chat support also works pretty well (surprisingly!). I have used it several times with not much waiting and half decent English. Portuguese data is a bit cheaper, but roaming is slightly more restricted, depending on the deal. If you want to roam mainly in Spain and Portugal then Simyo is probably more convenient.

As I always post on this subject, this wiki site is the best resource in Europe for choosing the right EU deal
