What are recommendations for this border town stay. I’m sure I’ve read reports on here before🤔

Just make sure of your security.
There have been reports of thieves working in pairs, one catches your attention outside the van, often selling fruit or clothes, while the other nips in and pinches whatever they can find, back over the bridge, before you realise that you've been done.
They prefer victims who arrive after a long day's travels.
Good laundromat, across the road, but the baddies can see you and know how long you'll be away from the van.
Enjoy your travels.

A good example from you why forum members should keep all things Portugal 🇵🇹 Spain 🇪🇸 France 🇫🇷 related. Which would possibly make your question easier to find using forum search engine, you understand?

Where did you get the reports?

From members known to me. And talking to other motorhomers.
A local motorhomer warned me off, when we spent a week as neighbours at Minas do Sao Domingo.
But if you don't believe me.... No worries.
Go there, try it yourself and perhaps leave a cab window open when you go to the launderette or go a meal.

Not doubting you . Though presume this is a recent thing ?
Was a regular there a few years ago and there didn't appear to be any problems

A few years ago, Motorhomes were much rarer, than nowadays. You didn't have to park on an aire, if you behaved yourself.
Since COVID,
More newcomers have arrived in, often unreliable vans and are under prepared for the pitfalls.
Also, I believe that the more tolerant police attitude to drug dealing, has increased the number of addicts, who have to steal to support their habit.
If you go to Albufeira and even the posher resorts, you will find that getting drugs on the streets, is easier than buying a pack of aspirin at pharmacy.

Got distracted by tavira and a fab aire here.
Reception has a warning “ don’t buy goods from street sellers that come to the site- they are stolen”
So think have to be wise/sensible precautions. The number of people here it feels safe🤔😀

We had a great two nights there last week.
Didn't feel at all threatened, we did the river crossing into Spain great day out.
There was a festival on in the town don't know the reason but it was a great atmosphere, and if you are a meat lover, my god there was an abundance. Like Jeff said I would deffo go there again.

It was , when I visited, always a busy aire . Even off season . Town closed down 9ish , Ayamonte opened up at same time .
If I remember correctly dogs are not allowed on the ferry

'Abundance': afternoon entertainment, but where the refreshments don't have the crusts cut off ... :ROFLMAO:

Both , IMHO. If you're aware of the pitfalls.
You can contrast the differences between the two cultures.
And the fuel prices make it essential to fill up in Spain.
The Plaza d' Espana SE of the port is worth the trek through the streets.
The Casino does cheap un-touristy grub or there's a posher restaurant on the southern corner of the plaza.

I asked because someone mentioned dogs not allowed on the ferry and we’ve got one. We can visit both places if need be, we’re not short of time.😀😀
