another one in trouble !

I’ve had my egr blanked off Eric, and had a remap, so the ecu doesn’t even know there’s an egr in the engine.
Had an emissions test today, during the MOT, and the readings are even better than previous MOTs, and performance is like a new van. Don’t fork out for a replacement, it will only let you down again in a couple of years.
I'll second that Rog and as I said it's only putting shit back into your engine.

I could straighten that in the press!
Look up Pakistani Truck on youtube and see how they dismantle and straighten out huge HGV chassis that have tumbled down a cliff.
When I drilled through my Transit chassis to fit a bigger water tank, I was disgusted how thin it was so I guess that axle could be straightened with Thor The Mighty Hammer. Ask the garage bloke to borrow his Draper Value straight edge . . . . .

If a THWAK bent it, then logic says that an ANTITHWACK will straighten it

Looking at the radius on the corner of the box section that will be 6 - 8 mm thick so will take more than a hammer to straighten.

That's why I suggested Thor The Mighty Hammer . . .

all tongue in cheek of course, in case you were thinking otherwise. I would go to a breakers yard and get another one. Either that was a crockery shattering, wardrobe breaking crash or that axle isn't as thick as you would like it to be.
In any case it's not as bent as the car I overtook once :

"Just off to the garage for an MOT dear. I'll be back for lunch"

I'll add to this list - my motorhome has what is being guessed at, as a clutch problem! I'm just glad it happened at home and not when I was away at the weekend with my 3 yr old grandson son!
I got motorgome started yesterday then it wouldn't go in to gear, then gave an awful screeching noise. I switched it off quickly. Hoping I've not done major damaged.

Is it not illegal to get vehicles remapped? I was told toilet dvla know and that there could be insurance issues? Family keep telling me to get my car remapped but I'm scared to get it done.

Remapping varies. It can be an innocent small remap that doesn't alter the horsepower but does alter the torque. Or it can be the teenager's remap from a sweet innocent Corsa which had 90hp when it left the factory and a remap made it 220hp. that would invalidate the insurance, or if the teenager did declare it, the premium would be £5,000. Then there is the remapping that doesn't necessarily alter the power but makes the Corsa (usually a Corsa, sometimes a cheap Ford) make very loud explosions, banging and popping its way repeatedly up and down your high street. Then when it's time for the MOT they just flick a switch to select the legal version of which map is programmed into the computer and all of a sudden it makes its way quietly and sedately to the MOT station.
Normally insurers will not charge any extra if you just have your remap increase the hp by 20 or 30. What they are interested in is anything that will radically change the handling characteristics of the vehicle. Too much power would send you over a cliff edge as you fail to negotiate a bend. But just increasing say a Fiat Ducato which came out of the factory as a 140hp engine to 160hp won't affect the insurance so long as you tell them at the start. As for removing an EGR valve, if the MOT station emissions test passes, no one is going to know.
Years ago I asked my friend who runs a garage why a Ducato motorhome with a 160HP engine is £4000 more than a 120hp. I said presumably they have bigger main bearings, crankshaft, bigger clutch. He said no its just greed, or rather marketing. All the metalwork in the engines is identical, it is only the computer program that is different, and that makes no difference at all to the cost of manufacture. He said I can uprate your 120 engine to 180 if you like . . . . .
I didn't have that, I did have 140hp and it was useful.

It depends on why you feel you need a remap Thea.
My primary reason was because my egr, exhaust gas recirculating valve, kept clogging up on a regular basis and always at an inconvenient time. This would bring the van to a standstill and was very annoying, not to mention how dangerous it could be, it happened once on the M25 and another time on the A14 which doesn’t even have a hard shoulder!
I decided to do away with the egr valve and was told unless the red warning light on the dashboard came on, I would be fine.
I was advised that IF the warning light came on, the van would soon go into limp mode and we would be back to square one.
After about two weeks, the red light did come on, and so I rang a local company to see what, if anything, could be done.
They had it for about two hours before announcing that the egr valve and the problems associated with it, would not give us any more trouble ever!
I’ve had a couple of emission tests since then, and the readings are just getting better, and the performance is solid.
I personally have so much more confidence in the van, and will be very reluctant if ever we have to ‘let her go’.
Hope all is well with you Thea, stay safe. xx

Clutch plate stuck to flywheel or release bearing has busted through the diaphram, comon falt with either very high mileage or driver with a left leg problem, remove leg from pedal once moving and after g change & stopped at lights, handbrake nuteral foot of pedal.
I used to have a customer who went through a clutch every week, i kid you not.

You could have fitted some quick release pins to the bell housing. Or just left off half the nuts and bolts. (Unless it was a Beetle, which only has four in the first place).

He used to rev it of the clock the whole wasy up the street with the pedal half out, we could hear him for well over a mile. 😂

My motorhome is an automatic/manual one. I drive in automatic all the time. Not a high mileage, about 45k I think.
I just hope it's not too an expensive job.

I'm doing okay, thanks Rog. Miss Donald every day but life goes on, as they say. Ben, our 3 year grandson is keeping life interesting and he and I go away on 'adventures'. I hope you are both well?
I've no particular reason for getting my car remapped except brother and friend are saying about expensive things that can go wrong, and by getting car remapped it would avoid the expense.
Take care too, and I hope your are both enjoying your travels. Xx

The EGR is a device for reducing NOx emissions. The current MOT does not yet test for NOx so it is unlikely you will fail the emissions test by removing the EGR or remapping. However the Government has been consulting about adding NOx tests to the MOT and you might have problems in the future. Meanwhile it seems you can get away with this though technically I think it invalidates the EURO status.
