Just ringing round for prices on cambelt change. For interest I thought I would try Fiat Professional.
Very helpful lady told me on the 2.3 I don’t have to worry about changing the water pump at the same time.
Whereas if it were the 2.2 it is best advice to change the water pump as well.
Is this correct ?

Paul

According to those on the Fiat forum when I checked for our 2.3 van, it is common sense to change it with the cam belt, particularly on a high mileage vehicle as the labour costs for replacing just a failed pump would be considerable. That said it is true that Fiat Professional will tell you that the replacement of the pump on a 2.3 version is not scheduled maintenance as they are supposed to last the lifetime of the van.

last time my belt was changed, the water pump showed signs of leaking so was replaced. It would have been anyway regardless.

Had our timing belt and water pump [plus diesel filter, because our usual independent garage keeps well clear] repleced in August 2025 by Graham Logan of Logan Vehicle Services [ex Fiat Professional Technician who still gets difficult jobs passed on from the Fiat Professional Garage ...]. £893.90 compared to Fiat Professional quote of £2233.87 ... Quality work at just under 1/2 the Fiat Professional Labour Rate

Here is a clue why it makes sense to change the pump, even if it isn’t due, when you do a cambelt change. The pump is belt driven and mine can be seen to be showing the initial signs of failure, see the pink crystals of the antifreeze that had started to escape. I don’t recall the mileage at the time, but it was likely to have been only 30,000 miles IMG_0702.jpeg

There is something to be said for timing chains lololol
I just had the timing chain done on my 1983 Mercedes. I only had it done because it has just reached 200,000 miles. The guy who did it was an expert, using genuine Mercedes parts, and riveted the link in on the new chain using the correct Mercedes tool. He confirmed that it was the first time the chain has been changed. Cost £640 and took 5 hours, including resetting the carburettor, valve clearances and ignition timing.
As for "It will last the lifetime of the engine" that is Fordspeak. They were the first to use the term 'lubricated for life'. You may as well say that when a baby is born it is fed for life . . .

By which I mean, in case you didn't understand, that Ford's implication that oil will last the life of the vehicle is ridiculous. Just as a baby will have a very short life if it is not fed, so any mechanical device which requires lubrication will have a very short, or at least considerably shortened life if it is not properly lubricated.

I went to Gisbournes outside of Stratford on Avon. They deal with lorries etc. Direct sensible advice and half the price of general garages. One of them also owns a motorhome.
Thankyou Anne, have cancelled my local booking and booked with Gisbourne’s at the end of the week. Their quote for cam belt was a lot lower than anyone else, enough to make us consider driving 34miles each way.
