Finally booted Virgin out

See what happens when you fire it up but I suspect a 6 year old box may be well out of date. Not so bad if it lets you update
On my list for today at some point, need to drag the TV out to get at all the gubbins, the model number brings up ones for sale but there may be an update process in the instructions.

Looks like if the manual is current I can

So far, I've plugged in the ethernet cable and power it up with new AAAs in the remote, it seems to be still working but although it is giving me a channel line up there are no programme info at all.

Ah, maybe it's still set up for a aerial not lan.

I've got it on the LAN now but a channel search fails, it goes through but finds none, The Recordings are there but poor quality as it was done with rabbit ears, I tried a manual software update which is also automatic on turn off, last was May 2022.

So not looking good, I'll let BRSK fit their box and if the tech man is willing I'll see if he can get his head around it, bonus if he can will be extra recording this appears to only have three tuners.

I admit to being a bit confused about what we can or can't do, but as said I have this Humax box.

And it has possible connectivity.

This one.

I need to contact BRSK to see if this will work off the internet, if so it'll be cheaper for us.
I have the same box Kev, it doesn't use internet for Freeview but you get BBC iPlayer, CH4, CH5, Netflix, YouTube etc but not ITV X, that was removed a few years ago, I have a good aerial signal so find it an excellent box for my needs, Freeview channel information and stations come from the aerial signal not LAN so it isn't the best for someone who has no aerial.

Hmm, no mention in the setup of having to have an aerial and a LAN.

I have gone as far as my brain will let me so I've disconnected the LAN and plugged it back into the Tivo and turned the Humax off for now.

The barstewards almost doubled our subscription, we've been with them for over ten years and had zero loyalty out of them, the packages were getting more into streaming from the likes of ITVX etc and quite often the programs were so pixelated they were unwatchable.

Last year a new outfit BRSK wired up our area and we've gone with them, basically just broadband and Freeview TV £29pm for 2 years, Virgin wanted more.

A breath of fresh air, Virgin were very unhelpful in unsubscribing, they are even charging us £28 early disconnection Grrrr, but Brsk are going to give us a credit on the account for that :) :) and because Liz's son is with them we both get £50 Amazon vouchers for referrals, so PM me if you go that way, and I'll refer you, I need the dosh :) :)

It's weird but I feel a sense of relief, like giving up cigs n booze.
Does BRSK wire into your house come from a telegraph post in the street?

Yes, they did the whole area last year.

BRSK arrived and did the installation, it took over four hours as he had to wait for the cherry picker to access the box on top of the pole.

the fitter was okay in doing the fitting but knew almost nothing about how to use it and there was no manual or user instructions, all online he said, I hate that, he was supposed to set up the Netgear WiFi extender but didn't so no internet in half the house.

It seems that you have to have an aerial to get Freeview despite it having a WiFi option, the WiFi option doesn't work at all beyond showing you what is available, fortunately, we do have a TV aerial so once we found the booster and connected it up it we got the channels.

To say it is dire to use is an understatement, it takes an age to go from one aspect to the other, the screen is cluttered with none relevant stuff and to go from one part of it to another you have to back out of it then go into the other, it is slow and clunky, and worse than the 7 year Humax box, so for £10pm it can go back, Liz will have a look and see if she can use it and if not then it will be going back.

Pleased with the internet side of it though.

We have had virgin when it was NTL World and know one can match them for speed Kev .I wouldn't use anyone else.
We just got fed up of price hikes and often no connection at all some days Jeff, not forgetting they cut us off ten days early, back on overnight.

If of any interest, While we have a Sky Box and setup, don't use the multiroom so when I am up in my Loft Studio/Mancave/Lab If I want to watch TV, I have to use on-line stuff or Freeview.
I decided to get a BT Vision Freeview Set Top Box to allow me to watch Live TV, Record programs and also watch the main streaming services.
I didn't want to spend much on a new box as Freeview reception inteh area is pretty poor generally and have an loft aerial somewhere that doesn't help matters, so expected to mainly use for streaming, but it does a decent job of getting a signal.
Think the box is made by Humax like a lot of these are, and I find it overall really good. Decent amount of storage for recordings and I can record stuff that the OH has zero interest in watching (typically war documentaries and 1970s TV series) and watch them while I work or just chill out. Can use an EE App (as the BT service is rebadged EE now?) on my phone to check the guide and setup recordings via the wifi.
The only downside really is the remote control has the 'backup' button in a very annoying place which is way too way to press when you are going for the down-arrow navigation.

What is really handy is these BT Vision boxes can be picked up very cheaply off eBay - I guess by people who have switched away from BT? But you DO NOT need to have any BT/EE contract to use 90% of the functions of the box.
So long story short ... if you are looking for a good value STB you can use to watch Freeview and record, maybe check out a used BT Vision?

Seems a good idea David, no idea which one to get as there ate least two and don't know which is best but for that money it's with a shot.

Can you post a pic or the model number of the one you have? how old is it>

On the plus side, I have managed to change the admin password and the network password to something memorable with the help of a very helpful chap in S Africa.

Just checked what I have and it is not actually a BT Vision, but a BT Youview, which I think is a newer better product? They are more expensive than the BT Visions (I had a BT Vision many years ago when they first came out and had BT Internet. I think it was again a Humax but just did off-air recording. maybe that is a difference between YouView and Vision?)

Anyway - here is a link to one on eBay that is the same as my unit - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/356533064489
I think I paid about the same? Got the YouView after a fair bit of reading up on different STBs

All the tv boxes I tried I couldn't get on with except Sky, never had a BT or a Virgin one though. I have lost count of the times I have cancelled Sky as we don't watch it but Caz keeps taking out a subscription, (cos its a bargain) grrrr

It's very rare I watch anything with adverts as the dogs go mad at animals, cartoons and lots of other things. If I do watch terrestrial tv it's the Freeview built in to the Samsung TV and it does need an aerial. I usually just watch stuff streamed off the internet in the house and the van. If you now have an internet signal you are happy with just get the apps and watch what you want, when you want Kew

I've ordered that one to see how it goes, I do have a Humax but I've not set it up yet and a spare PVR won't go amiss anyway.

BRSK asked for a Review so they got one, they don't like it up em Pike :D :D

Why do they need an ethernet cable though?

You said earlier that you did not have an aerial, now you have one.

The Netgear wifi extender is easy to set up yourself and I find it strange that such a strong wifi signal is not present in half your house. Do an Ookla speed test in various rooms to check.
