Fishing

It depends where you are Colin, in Wales you can only go fishing if you can walk to the venue. In England you can go fishing as part of your exercise regime, once a day and no overnight fishing. However according to the guidance you should not leave your local area to go fishing. Nobody has defined "local area" and you should not be fined if you are stopped en route, but clearly you will get a warning if the police think you have strayed and told to go home. The Angling Trust are advising members not to undermine the Government concession by flouting the intention of the lockdown. Leaves me in a quandary as my nearest trout fishery is 12 miles away, I'm going to let things settle down before I decide whether to venture out.

Fishing to be allowed during England’s national lockdown – Angling Trust announcement

07 January 2021
The Government have now formally responded to the representations made by the Angling Trust. We have promoted the huge benefits of fishing on individual health and wellbeing and have been able to present a case to which the Government have listened. On this basis I am pleased to announce that fishing will be permitted during the third national lockdown in England.
The DCMS Sports Team confirmed the following:
“fishing is allowed as exercise so long as participants adhere to the rules on staying local, gathering limits, social distancing and limiting the time spent outdoors”
This has also been confirmed by DEFRA:
“Cabinet Office have now officially confirmed that angling / fishing (incl. sea fishing off private boats, water sports) can be considered exercise and are hence permitted.”
And by Sport England – see here.
We have worked extremely hard to reach this position and we as anglers have a duty to abide by the strict conditions under which fishing is once again permitted. With infection rates and death tolls rising we must stick to the Government’s rules and ensure that angling remains part of the solution and does not cause problems.
Please bear in mind these key points which will be reflected in the new Angling Trust guidelines which we will publish shortly:
  • This is a strictly limited resumption of LOCAL fishing and very different to how we have been allowed to operate since May.
  • We are in a National Lockdown and this must be respected. The law requires a ‘reasonable excuse’ to leave your home or penalties will apply.
  • The Government has recognised that fishing can be seen as exercise, which is expressly permitted under the lockdown rules, although outdoor recreation is not.
  • Organised sporting gatherings are prohibited so no match fishing.
  • The exercise is limited to once a day so no overnight fishing whatsoever.
  • To remain within the law you should follow the Government’s guidance, and only fish locally. If you have no local fishing available then you will have to take your daily exercise in other ways. Full Government guidance on travel can be found here
We are once again able to enjoy the sport we love at a time when many others cannot and we must ensure that every angler adheres to the rules.
I would ask all anglers who are not members to join the Angling Trust and give us your support. We have worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome and that is only possible thanks to the support of our new and existing members. I would ask all anglers who value their ability to go fishing to make the same commitment as your fellow anglers have and join the Angling Trust. We are stronger together!

Stay safe and very best fishes

I may have missed something here, Annie, but I read the BBC piece as indicating that angling has been recognised as exercise and therefore permitted under the various tier regulations, providing it doesn't involve travelling a long distance and social distancing regulations are observed.
Or have I got this totally wrong?

Colin :):):)
I have no idea I might have to read it again I read no fishing but it was 4am wen I read it. 😂😂

Looking at the rising number of cases locally, I've decided it's not worth it . Doesn't seem to matter where or when you fish, there's usually someone who stops to chat.

You shouldn't catch so many Chris, then people wouldn't bother asking what bait you are using 🤔😀

It's more common to be on a beach miles away from everyone and the local 'expert' comes trotting over and tells you 'you'll catch nowt here, never seen anyone catch owt'. I usually accept his knowledge and refrain from showing him what I've caught. ;)
Had a classic last year while plugging for bass. Chap came over to tell me I was wasting my time, as he walked his dog there every morning and had never seen anyone catch anything. Right on cue a bass took the lure and gave me a good run before I landed it. Chap said nothing and just walked away, I nearly called after him to see if he wanted it for his tea :)

After seeing a chap fly fishing for mullet last year, I have been sorting through my old fly stuff. Years since I did any fluff chucking and that was mainly in streams on Exmoor, but going to have a go at salt water this year. Anyone on here tried it?

No but I have a feeling I’m going to 😂

Hi
I,ve caught a few in S France on fly but caught dozens on freelined bread. The fly I caught them on looked like a bit of bread. Try getting the mullet to show interest in bits of soft white bread then cast a similar fly among the bread.
Cheers, Jim.

Not for me but Chris caught thornback skate, least I think that’s what it was but too small to eat.
Ray have a very strong ammonia taste.
Soak the wings in water over night, rinse and your good to go.
Dog fish curry is awesome, but getting the skin off is a bit of a knack. Don't fillet, cut into stakes, like having massive scampi balls in curry 😋
