Thought it better to start a thread, keep it all tidy. Currently at Arromanches on a municipal site, closed till April but OK to use, facilities all closed.
Yesterday cycled over to Juno beach, this was the Canadian D-Day beach landing.

On our return trip took small detour to Vers - Sur- Mer to view the British memorial garden which opened June 2021. What an amazing and humbling memorial. Here are some pics I took using iPhone, better ones taken by my bridge camera.

Some pics from todays wee jolly. While the gun battery is impressive, I wondered how many POW’s, political prisoners, and possibly Jews, died during the construction of the many Nazi defences dotted around Normandy.

We toured eastern France last June to early September, and stopped at several towns with memorials to the civil populations who were deported to destinations unknown, Terry. And I'm reading a David Young book at present, 'Stasi 77' which mixes a 1975 Stasi/Kripo murder plot with a 1944/45 Forced Labour gang of deported French citizens. Fact and fiction are both horribly grim

An interesting book title, Steve, I’ll look it up.
The attached image makes statement about the suffering of French locals being witness to their liberation happening in front of their eyes, and the loss of local life and property D-Day impacted in them. The statement image taken yesterday at the British Memorial, Vers Sur Mer.

Terry, the David Young book is part of a series set in East Germany in the mid 1970s and focuses on the struggles between the Stasi and Kripos for power on day-to-day policing and the boundaries of State security. The first book is Stasi Child

Your pictures bring back memories of me taking dad over there in 2001, it was the first time he'd been the since he left during the war.
It was a very moving but satisfying experience, one I won't forget.
It all started when I showed him pictures from a visit and he said how he'd like to go, so I said get a passport and we'll go. The next thing he came to me with the passport and off we went.
Just to finish off the experience it was the weekend before 9 11 when the towers in New York were blown up, so l can't forget the date.

That is a good memory to have with you and your father, Lee.

Some pics from todays wee jolly around Bayeux. Beautiful place and the cathedral is outstanding piece of architecture. Well worth a visit, also found another MH aire, dump and fill only, no over night allowed, 100 litre fresh water = 3€.
