TOUR DE PEYREBRUNE

Took a cycle over to the above named tower, a hard dig to get up the hills, well worth the effort though. Was originally a castle, all that is left is tower and some of the original fortifications. A few century back, castle bought by an abbot of the church, it was he who stuck the Virgin Mary figure on the very top.

As you head towards the Cathar regions (or not) it reminds me that there is still so much for everyone to see. Thank you again for all your photos. 👍

I’ve seen a couple in Holland like that fire engine in the photo converted to a camper. German engineering probably uncomfortable but last forever.
Magirus Deutz was imported in to the UK about 1966 they had a air cool engine in those days we was running at 26/28ton gross weight

Left Villafrenche de Panat aire this morning heading to the BVF of Peyre. I drove some interesting roads, no room for error, highest point 1500 metre’s, where we were met thick fog for a spell. For some reason we missed Peyre and ended up at Millau viaduct aire. Had a wander, interesting visiter centre, then to the viewpoint to take pics. Bridge northbound carriageway completely closed, hence slow moving and backed up traffic.

Left bridge aire to pick up the road back to Peyre, cycle race was taking place, we were detoured. The detour took us on roads no wider than a decent pavement width, Peyre was cancelled and we ended up crossing the Millau Bridge, 15.50€ the one way cost, was a good experience driving over the 2.5 kilometre bridge, with speeds decreased, I got the chance to take in some of the structure, an amazing bridge.

Now located at the BVF La Couvertoirade, created by the Knights Templer around the 12th century. An amazing fortified town, we will do a proper and thorough tour tomorrow.

Some details for anyone interested visiting La Couvertoirade. There is a motorhome parking area, which costs 4€ per overnight stop. Funds go towards restoration work of the Fortress, with a lot of this ongoing, but does not impact the tourist experience. There are no facilities at the parking area, apart from rubbish bins. There are toilets a short walk from from the CP. Also wise to have essentials with you on arrival, food etc, although eateries are available within the walls. Food we had today was all locally sourced.

On the way into the fortress, there is a deli butcher/cheese/wine shop, check out the bill for three items, especially the deer & cepe (mushroom) sausage. Which is yummy with fresh bread 😋

Haven’t travelled far today, we are now parked up for the night at St, Maurice Navacelles, village. Tomorrow a drive or cycle over to the Cirque de Navacelles, a UNESCO protected site. Renowned French sculpture Paul Darde studio still remains here, although in a poor state. Attached image is one of his pieces on the roadside. The drive over to here certainly gave a better insight of how harsh and rugged terrain this region is.

I've never quite understood the way farmers leave stuff to rot rather than sell it when it had value.

My daughter in laws father was exactly the same. He had thrown a perfectly acceptable ploughshare into a hedge and wasn't interested in selling it.

Strange world full of unusual people.

En-route to St, Maurice Navacelles, village, by pure coincidence and luck, an eagle flew out in front of us, which was captured on my dash cam, images are not great as I took a pic of the eagle from my laptop screen. I can tell you, this bird was huge viewed in the flesh.
