Generators YES or NO?

Generators are always a hot topic amongst motorhomers, but really the topic is not generators it is the noise they make. I doubt anyone we mind an almost silent generator like the Telair unbody units.

The problem is actually the inconsiderate generator owners who run them without a care for other campers. Even the EU20i can be annoying is running above tick over. Owners can buy enclosures that fit over the units and deaden lots of the noise but I have yet to see anybody use one.

So for the poll.

For should motorhomers use generators when around other motorhomes or campers?

When we lived on a narrow boat it was accepted that people only ran a genny between 08.00 and 20.00. After 20.00 there was always the risk of the genny falling in the cut.

I hate the noise - no one could actually like it! However, depending on the reason for use, my tolerance would go up or down.

I don't mind the noise, I don't notice it until the generator is turned off then I suddenly notice the silence.

I think that ***** is right, there's no yes or no answer.

I find that when it's mine, it doesn't really annoy me at all, but someone else's is like a dentists drill!

But seriously, if a genny is being used at a reasonable time of day & the user tries to limit the noise then, no worries.

Personally, even using my own genny annoys me!

Don’t mind if used in sensible ways, some are used to charge aids etc,you would run it at times that people are not sitting relaxing/eating or sleeping

A couple of hours through the day maybe at an agreed time when others are about is fine by me,we do not all have banks of batteries and huge solar arrays.

I would have thought this more of a Wild Camping problem not one for the motor homers this site is aimed at.

To me there is no difference between running a genny or starting the MH engine. If someone needs power then they will get it by whatever means they have. Some complain about the noise of Diesel heaters. When do you stop complaining . If you are living life among others then some things have to be tolerated.

Skiing without my Genny would be a nightmare, any anyone with kids has no right to complain about Genny noise.

Tin hat on. ???????

I gave my genny to Channa, too noisy for us, so must have bothered others, it's much better now that I can't hear it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is one difference with running engines. If the van parked alongside the hab door of a continental van and is itself a continental van, the exhaust fumes will come straight in through the door if open.
I expect the same would be possible with two UK vehicles.
We have been in this situation. With a geny it can be located away from the van

The easy answer to that is close the door and open windows at the other side. Its all about tolerance and rubbing along together. If you want your own space peace and quiet no fire pits or any other disturbances stick to Wild Camping in the middle of nowhere on your own. Any where there are other people there will always be some that annoys. Even on a Forum.

In Phil's introduction to the poll he does infer that the poll is about inconsiderate users of generators. I've had people ask those nearby if they mind a generator being on for a specified period of time. Seemed to work well for all concerned.

Any generators for sale?

I've got one free to a good home it's just a noisy 2 stroke thing that's in the way.

I'm not a fan of gennies but I'll be relying on one over this winter, until I can get solar installed next summer,I certainly won't run it if I have neighbours.
