Sad news..
We were in the same situation 18 months ago.
You'll find something else .
Luckily, it was a good time to settle down and act our ages, in retrospect.
Hope things improve .

Sad news, hope you find a good replacement hobby. We are just one driver at the moment still. Can see us reaching this decision too if Dave doesn't get his licence back. Horrible thought.

Hello John. Only to say do not despair. Obviously, I do not know the reason for your sight loss or any ongoing conditions. I lost the use of sight in the left eye in February 2018 - 6 months after buying our first new motorhome - our retirement dream and objective. I was 68, I'm 70 now. It happened within 5 minutes on a sunny February lunchtime. I was alone at home. I felt my whole life plans dropping apart.
Anyway, phoned the doctor who saw me immediately, got me to the ophthalmology dept at the hospital (I cycled as it is close by). I had a blockage in a blood vessel. Cutting treatment actions short the result was nothing could be done. Oh poo I thought (well not exactly) won't be able to drive MH will have to go etc etc. Wife can't drive, never has. Still have no sight from the left eye but have a normal vision from the right. The right meets and exceeds all legal requirements.
And so DVLA, insurance etc (all confirmed in writing later) said crack on, no issue, loads of monocula drivers out there, what you worrying about!! So crack on I did. Took a bit of getting used to. Its only close up you lose the distance judgement, like a touch screen on mobile and tablet, how near top of cup water is when making a brew, going down steps (people sometimes think I'm drunk!) But driving, parking, reversing never had an issue. Our MH is 7.3m long Elddis Autoquest 185 (if you see me give me a wide berth he he!!). Now done 22k miles up to March last year over UK and a bit in France.
So, like I say don't despair anyone. We can overcome.

Look on the bright side:) I lost my left eye in 1964 and have driven all sorts of vehicles since, just need to get used to depth judgement, half cups of tea etc. Never a half pint of beer though🤣, it just takes a little time to get used to it
Gave all details to DVLA no problem, I rang the DVLA and the chap was most helpful.
Here's wishing you many years of driving and enjoying life😁👍

Very interesting thread, 3 weeks ago I woke up and could not see properly out of my left eye, I knew that I required a visit to specsavers for new glasses as I have not been for a few years. Got an appointment with the optician but never got as far as the eye test, after taking pictures of my eyes he mailed the results to the hospital, told me to go home and wait for a call he also told me if I had any problems with my right eye to go straight to A&E.
Got a call in the evening for an early appointment the following morning, had plenty of tests and they told me I have a CRVO, if I had gone to A&E initially the prognosis would have been better, as it is now I need a course of treatment to prevent any further deterioration and to protect my good eye.
I have not driven for the last month but after reading the thread it would seem that my Motorhoming days may not be over.

Hello Matchlock. Yes, it's CRVO I had (have). The Doctors attempted various solutions (like deflating the eyeball slightly to see if pressure reduction causing the block (cholesterol) would move it). I had to have a few monthly visits, extending to three monthly then stopping after they saw no other potential damage or issue. I was warned about symptoms to look out for in the right eye - just in case.
Up to this point at age 67 I was on no medication and while a little overweight, felt fit (and still do) however my GP put me on Statins and Asprin as more precautions. I have worn spectacles since being 18 years and do my two-yearly optician visit and no further issues found.
I'm a member of the I.A.M. and discuss this with them and up to COVID used to go out on driving check-ups with some serious strict examiners and observers and still maintain my driving standards.
So telling you now - your motorhome days far from over. That feel for the open road will be satisfied.

Not been a good 18 months for us had trouble with my eyes so we have decided to give up Motorhomes can drive now only one eye at moment waiting to get the other one fixed don't know when enjoyed the time with you all John@ShirleyView attachment 58499
Hi John I hope things improve for you. Was good to see you and Shirley and that little old Jack Russell at Brandon when the steam fair was on. All the best. Jim

Thank you Proverbs2329, it gives me hope for the future, I have yet to go through the procedures but at least my wife who has never driven the van has agreed to give it a go, knowing her it will not be a problem once she has tried it, it is a relief that I have back up if I need it.
Maybe I can also teach her engineering, my airbag module failed a couple of months ago, I had to buy a new one which I now have but struggling to refit it with my eye now and the MOT is due at the end of this month, but in the current lockdown it is not a major problem, onwards an upwards!

Sorry to hear this bad news John. You really have had a bad 18 months with loosing your little dog and now this eye problem. After reading through the posts above must make you feel a lot better and maybe postpone your early retirement from MotorHoming. Getting out and about keeps you and Shil fit and active So hope to see you two and the four wheeled yellow peril about again in the very near future.
.... Tom ....

like it or not ,we're all disintegrating in different ways at different speeds. all you can do is stay positive and keep adapting
as for your missus , i took mine to a local industrial estate on a sunday and let her play with the van .she thoroughly enjoyed it and i have no doubt she'd be fine to take over if needed .

Sorry to hear about your eye. Don’t despair though, I had a similar visit to Specsavers. Who, after my initial test, rang the my hospital and told to go straight away. After a total of six injections in my eye, it’s a lot better. I have ARMD, but can still drive, I have no focus in one eye. I tend to avoid night driving though. It’s a good day tomorrow?

Jenny is the driver.
One Saturday night , during a pleasant meal, with friends, she realised that she couldn't see their faces across the table, with her right eye..
Next morning she could see nothing at all with it.
She'd just had her second cataract done.
A call to the NHS Helpline, directed is to the Royal Manchester Eye hospital .
They emptied the eye, put some stuff in and re- inflated it.. And covered it.
We'd just bought a new van and were 60% full timing , spending the winters abroad.
We were locked down in Altrincham.

That was 22 May 2017.. the Night of the Manchester Arena Bombing..
A very sad and low time for us .. And Manchester Hospitals.
They were Brilliant.

Intensive follow up visits , loads of tests.
Then she was given the all clear.
Back, the next summer for a check up...
And discharged.
Don't give up hope
