LPG gas

I’ve fitted refillable lpg bottles to the Hymer and what a differance I’m finding, cost is the first thing I’ve noticed, not had any probs so far at stations filling them up
Think.i will save a whack and when I get another van they will be coming with me

Most garages have the relevant adapters available, although it is easier to have your own. (We found that out when the bottom fell out of the gas cupboard on a twisty mountain road and the bottles, pipes and electric hookup cable were dragged along behind like entrails!!)

I’ve deffo got my money back on 2x11kg refillables. However I’m going to fit a filter to mine having lost 2 regulators to dodgy continental gas...

I carry a spare regulator, luckily I also did when the dreaded Truma reg failed. I also carry a spare water pump

Likewise... and a spare lid for the potty cassette.

Hi, you say you have fitted refillable lpg bottles, what size of bottles did you fit, and what make, will be converting a Mercedes sprinter and looking for information, thanks in advance

Never had a problem finding gas once I find a station I mark it on my map I now have stations for all direction of travel

I have an underslung tank with external filler.

The beauty of this system is that I can top it up before a trip so I know that I have sufficient gas for the whole holiday, without the need for changing bottles if one runs out in the middle of the night.

Have only checked a couple of LPG sites but found Shell in Musselburgh at about £0.67ppl. Morrisons in Hamilton at £0.52ppl.
How does this compare with the rest of the country?

Enjoy, from Pauline and Roy.

To best honest I never look at the price as I don’t think I have ever spent more than about £6 refilling and I have 2 11kg tanks which usually last Longer than I anticipate.

When I had my under slung tank fitted it released space to fit 3 x 110Ah batteries which then left space in the other locker for a B2B and the starter battery. I have never had a problem with regulators despite spending 6 months abroad touring and putting in, on average, 1,100 litres of gas per year during 8 years of full timing. All the pipework was metal. The regulator was directly out of the tank. I was filling 60 litres every 3 to 4 weeks. I had an LPG Generator built in but after fitting Solar it became almost redundant.

One of the first jobs when I got my current van, done it on the last few vans I've had going back about 12 years. Only once had a problem where I couldn't fill up & that was in Spain near Alicante at a Repsol station thought they were telling us we couldn't fill our gas bottle, turned out the reason was they had run out of gas. I only ever fit 1 x 11 kg bottle, I do carry a 6 kg calorlite as a backup just in case but only ever needed to use it once & that was because I wanted to run the 11 kg bottle to empty to see how long it would last. Having a gauge on the bottle which most seem to have now makes it easier than trying to estimate how much gas I have left. Costs aside though it is the convenience, you can top it up at anytime when you want rather than with calor bottles waiting for one bottle to run out.

One or two members on facts reported a higher than usual rate of refusal in Italy this year. If I remember correctly it tended to be one of the bigger chains and supply could be replenished by smaller independents. Worth monitoring if your plans include Italy in future.

Had the same problem. Is your regulator located a good height above the tank, it needs to be?? We raised ours and fitted a larger Clappe single stage regulator and never had any problems since.

Really?

My underslung tank (fitted by Autogas) has the regulator at the same height as the tank under the van.

Can this cause problems?

My regulator is halfway up the tank, it has never been a problem

I have just sold my van that was fitted with an under slung tank in 2008. It had the same 50mbar regulator fitted although I had carried a spare. I had put on average 1,100 litres a year of gas through it from 2010 to 2016. So no you should have no problems. I used to get Chris to check my system every year. I did develop faults with the filling pipe and the gauge/float valve but none with the regulator.

If you are going to fit re-fillable gas bottles consider only 1 x 11kg and have 1 x 907 Camping Gaz bottle with an adaptor tap fitted to 907 the hose from 11kg can be changed over in emergency had this on a previous van was very useful in Morrocco where could not fill re-fillable but 907 were cheap and easy to find. Have just fitted same to my new van a Challenger 398 and it also saves weight. The 907 is used for the Cadac but acts as emergency to the 11kg bottle. Lived in van for 4 months on a tour of Europe used 1 full tank. Fridge and cooker only used.
