LPG gas

I have had Gaslow 2x11Kg for over 7 years. Originally, as I didn't want to drill the side of the van I fitted the re-filler socket inside the gas locker. I have heard of people being refused filling on systems like this so I bit the bullet and got the drill out! In Portugal, one station filled me up saying that if the filler had been inside they would not have filled me up. Only other problem I have had was in the Netherlands earlier this year when on paying the lady told me that they had been told to refuse filling of motorhomes but as I was visiting and that I wouldn't be there again, she had allowed filling. Refillable is great if spending time on the Continent (don't forget the adaptors!) and/or your back is not up to lifting and carrying exchange bottles.

Personally I would have both a refillable and an exchangeable as we found that we were having to drive miles out of our way to find lpg but we were using it for the engine too .
For normal motorhome users who don't go off grid or use the van frequently and only use the van on camping sites ,the only benefit is not having to lift bottles as you would never recover the initial outlay.
Also bear in mind that lpg is actually disappearing from forecourts and we ended up in some industrial estates to find it !

Normal motorhomers??

One or two members on facts reported a higher than usual rate of refusal in Italy this year. If I remember correctly it tended to be one of the bigger chains and supply could be replenished by smaller independents. Worth monitoring if your plans include Italy in future.

Been refused lpg in Portugal once as they said( through another English speaker) that it was liilegal to sell lpg for filling up bottles for cooking, and they were only allowed to sell it for vehicle driving fuel. Never encountered that problem again but then they never knew.

They are worth it for the convenience alone. I never turn mine off . It is a little sparse in Scotland but down here in Englandshire it has never been a problem. Even when I relied on it for my LPG Transit.

There’s a app for lpg called filllpg google it Roy gives stations near and afar and costs

Thanks Gordon will look it up.

Up here in N E Scotland and points further north LPG is becoming increasingly hard to find and I would have real problems if I only had a refillable system. On my Frankia I ran with 1 Refillable Gaslow (11kg) and 1 exchangeable Calor (13kg) and have ordered the same for my new van. I typically find that on the continent I use the Gaslow as LPG is easy to find but I use the Calor at home. This way I have complete flexibility.

Been using refillables since 1986! Remember the Carver Portatank? Now an Alulite, well worth the money for weight-saving.
Main snag with LPG is variation in propane content, high in UK, but only 10% in Crete, for example. Low propane = poor cold weather performance, plus a Gaslow gauge won't be accurate. Still, beats exchange bottles hands down.

Have only checked a couple of LPG sites but found Shell in Musselburgh at about £0.67ppl. Morrisons in Hamilton at £0.52ppl.
How does this compare with the rest of the country?

Enjoy, from Pauline and Roy.

No duty on gas for habitation use, makes it a fair bit cheaper but you have to find calor Center or somewhere else that’s not a fuel station.

Just done the similar with my Autocruise Alto, but went for the under hung 20 litre tank. Took a while to decide which system to go for but finished with GasIT as I now have the old LPG cupboard as extra storage area. As The Laird comments already saving money when purchasing LPG from service stations, no issues to date.

I don’t mind buying anything (like Gas It kit) I can take from van to van. In the past I’ve spent a few pounds only to leave it on the van come sale time.

Perhaps try using https://www.filllpg.co.uk/?page=lpg.php. plenty of places to fill in NE Scotland and the far North, maybe not the cheapest but still a lot cheaper than exchangables.
I'm no expert on gas, but I understand that it's highly inadvisable to use the kits available to refill normal cylinders, because of the risk of not leaving enough room for expansion due to temperature changes.

Has anybody found using the adapter in Europe (for us, France specifically) that you get a lot of hissing as gas escapes? Could our adapter just be faulty?

Morrisons in Kirkaldy are usually the lowest on the north side and the pisition of the gas pump means we can do both gas and diesel without moving.

there is a spring loaded valve at each end of the filling the hiss of escaping gas is just the gas trapped between ,

Hi. If you want any advise/new systems/ help with anything LPG, give Autogas 2000 at thirsk a ring on 01845 523213, or just call in, they are always willing to help, they fitted my system 7years ago, the regulator tails required changing due to age date, called in and they had it done in no time.:Thumbs_Up_Hand_Sign
