Mattress toppers

Our MH has a fixed French Bed layout. The supplied mattress had to be smoothed out with various old quilts/blankets before the OH could comfortably sleep in the bed. Some years later and we were rolling into the middle etc so I decided to get a new memory foam mattress similar to the one on our bed at home. I contacted Duvalay as I had used them many years ago for a new mattress for a touring caravan (this was before they became Duvalay). They were very helpful and I ended up ordering two single mattresses. One was the normal size and the second had the "wedge" cut out for the bed shape. They normally have templates for the cutting machines but they didn't for our Autotrail Miami so following their instructions I measured up and 5 weeks later the pair of mattresses arrived complete with covers and two sets of fitted sheets and pillow cases to match. They are brilliant! The whole lot cost no more than a top quality memory foam mattress from Dreams. Because they asked us for our height/weight/sleeping side and other info we really have got an excellent bespoke system - and we both have a great nights kip every night!

We use 2 Duvalay sleeping bags, nice and warm and comfy and easy to roll up and store in wardrobe.

Toppers are excellent for aiding support and comfortableness but do not buy a cheap one. Its difficult to asses their suitability when the a wrapped up our first one was from Home Bargains but after trying it out realized, once again, you get what you pay for. Found that if you get 2" thick (50cm to youngsters) that it provides what we were looking for

Had to smile! 50cm is half a metre. It would be really comfy!

Our Hymer mattresses (2 x singles to make a double) was not very comfortable so I brought a memory foam topper, perfect, no looking back?

I agree entirely with the storage issue raised. When we had a smaller camper with a rock and roll bed, it was a morning ritual to roll up the mattress topper, put straps around it and squash it into the space under the seat. It did not appear to suffer from this treatment although it always put up a good fight. With the fixed bed in our later, bigger vehicle the topper stays in place as it would at home. We sleep very well on it and so recommend mattress toppers.

How can it possibly work? if you touch it, it moves away easily so how can it support you? even the firm grades jsut move at a lesses degree, I have tried them all, still snake oil.

Anyway people have invested a lot of money in them so I'm wasting my time, emperor's new clothes n all that

The mattress supports where it touches, memory foam moulds to your body and distributes the pressure over more area, reducing the pressure. This is why they’re not made of wood, which of course would be very supportive (on your elbows, knees, hip bones...) ?

I use an Aldi mattress topper and I sleep better in the van than I do at home. Storage is an issue as others have said but soooo worth it?

Must say having a 13” thick sprung mattress in the van does make it very hard to get in the under bed area from inside. Worth it when you go to sleep though

Are we really being honest saying the mattress toppers do really add the X factor we’ve been looking at dunhelm ,and imho unless you go for a really expensive thick memory one we think the are not what they appear to be cracked up about .getting a slumber type sleeping bag unzipped? Could this be a maybe?

I've had a back and hip problem for years now and used to suffer a lot more when trying to sleep. Memory foam helps to keep your spine straight. All the bony lumps and bumps will sink into it but the rest of you will still have support where the foam is not compressed. I can't tell you the difference it makes for me... I have a full Tempur mattress at home and wouldn't be without memory foam toppers in the van. Sometimes I have to go without - hotels and stuff - and I can honestly feel a huge difference in the amount of pain I feel.

In the van, especially for those who make up a bed from seat cushions, it's often about smoothing out those other lumps and bumps

My campervan has a rock and roll bed formed by unfolding the rear seat and the join where the metal frame of the seat pad runs across is exactly where my hip rests when sleeping. After putting up with this for some time I looked at getting a mattress topper but balked at the cost of memory foam. Just a couple of weeks ago I was passing a new shop on the high street where fitters were laying floorcovering. On the pavement there was a roll of foam about 2 cm. thick so I asked if it was waste could I have it. Thanks guys. I went home and trimmed it to be a custom fit for the van's bed. Later I bought four metres of polycotton material and made a cover. Because I made it I was able to put and extra piece of foam across the part which coincided with the metal frame mentioned above. I have yet to try it out but I will do so this month when continuing my "one night a month in the van" challenge.

Following on from my upcycled topper project I can report that it worked well. On Tuesday night I spent a comfortable night in the van with no hip problems. And it rolls up and is held with a couple of webbing straps and click buckles and stores behind the seat when travelling. Not everybody's cup of tea but I'm pleased with the result.

We got ours at Dunelm too. About 2" thick. Not only a big help on comfort, we find it's good for thermal insulation when we're out in Winter and it must be protecting our bench seats to some extent.

Because we fold our bedding away every day, out topper started splitting down the middle after two years use. Clever wife produced a couple of covers made from sheets and now we have two toppers that butt together. V. Good.

We’re fortunate enough to sleep above the cab and found a four foot memory foam mattress that fits perfectly. The only problem now is getting out of bed in the morning as it’s far too comfy.
