new scottish ferry

Leaving cost out of the equation as I’m more interested in the miles and the busyness of the roads. And we tow a trailer for our recumbent trikes and always use motorways including the toll roads.

My drive to Portsmouth is 432 miles with 2 overnight stops. From Preston on, apart from the M6 toll I don’t enjoy it.

From there we have taken BF direct to Spain, a 2 night cruise which is pretty boring, but gets us to our first site on the same day as docking. 122 miles on good quietish roads. Total mlles from home 554.

We have also taken the ferry to St Malo with 2 overnight stops n France before our first site in Spain. 570 miles on good not too busy roads in the main apart from round Bordeaux. Total from home 1002.

Home to Rosyth is 60 miles, Dunkirk to first site in Spain 786 miles. Total from home 846. But the road from Dunkirk until we merge with the route from St Malo.? (I wouldn’t take the route through Paris)

We do Kirkcaldy to Portsmouth, about 505 miles over 2 leisurely days, and avoid the M6 Toll. Our overnight stop is on the A491 Hagley Bypass, roughly mid way between J3 & J4 of the M5 South, after stopping at Asda Oldbury (directly off J2 M5 S and about 12 miles north of the layby) for any food and a cheap diesel refill.

Following morning, it's less than 3 miles to rejoin M5S and then onto J4A to pick up the M40 for the final 155 miles to Portsmouth. We make an early stop at Central Warwick Services (by J12 Gaydon) to avoid filling the cassette, and then a gentle poodle to Portsmouth by lunchtime

Curious to know what advantage there is to taking M6 toll road ? I've always avoided it

Much, much less traffic - no long queues of trucks. I find it almost relaxing ☺️ And we stop at Norton Caines services - only for parking and boil a kettle. They have a few designated spaces for Motorhomes/caravans or if full there’s the lorry park, and a reasonable dog walk path.

Don't see the point of leaving a road I paid for to go onto another and pay again.
Me neither. We're both retired and don't mind a little delay.

Perhaps its my incompetence, but I dislike the way the charged section is the simplistic way forward, and we need to think a little harder to navigate to the free route.

A, “your money” aka taxes does not pay for roads - or anything else. When taxes are collected and end up in the government’s coffers the money is destroyed. The government spends money created by the BoE ex nihilo. It doesn’t use anybody’s taxes, or anybody’s money. (If you want references see Richard Murphy The Joy of Tax or Prof. Stephanie Kelton The Deficit Myth.

B, Each to their own but we use Toll roads in both Spain and France. It amounts (roughly) to between 3%, if we drive through France, to 1%, if we dock in Spain, of our total expenses over the 90 day holiday. Money well spent in our opinion.

Deffo each to their own. We used a couple in France last time, it saved a lot of time, and I was towned out that day, a bear can only take so many raised crossings and roundabouts in one day.
