My dog now has a Spanish passport so no worries ref animal health certificate.
All British on site were getting them too.
 
We were considering asking a local vet to do the same, when we get down to Portugal later in the year. Can I ask how much you were charged please, and did it take very long to do?

40 €. I also had the rabies booster done 22€. Wasn't due for another year but vet gave a 3 year one so OK for while.
Need yours and UK pet passport and an address. I gave campsite. Reason mainly is although the vet did it there and then the details go away to be registered. Whoever they are, they send a credit card sized ID for the dog.
From various Facebook accounts it may be a bit cheaper in France and Portugal.

My vet in the UK seemed ok with people getting their pet passports on the continent, he said he could make better use of his time than filling out forms for the AHCs.

My dog had a Spanish passport which , unfortunately , was in my van when it was stolen . British replacement cost £50+ for the actual book only .
 
With the European pet passport you will need to do the rabies bit in Europe, not sure if it’s yearly or not ? We know someone who paid €35 for passport and rabies in Spain. The bit that I don’t get is the microchip can that still stay as a uk address ?

Forgot to add. The previous year I had a blood test done(rabies vaccine levels) as things were still uncertain due to Brexit.
Vet was pleased with this so uncertain if it is necessary for EU passport. Sure it would be cheaper in Spain than UK if needed though.

I have written to APHRA and they said it’s quite acceptable, as long as you obtain an AHC for the outward bound journey.

Confused now [not tricky]
Don't know who APHRA is ? Surely not a lot of point getting European passport if you still have to buy an AHC every time you go abroad ?

That is for the first time you take a dog abroad in order to obtain an EU passport.
 
APHRA is the new DEFRA. It stands (I believe) for Animal Plant Health and Rural Affairs. It was formed at Brexit.
I wrote to them after the introduction of the AHC, and they confirmed that an AHC would only be needed to take your pet abroad for the first time since Brexit, and then a EU Pet Passport could be issued, in any EU country, negating the need for an AHC for each trip.
The reply from them is on the forum..... somewhere.
 
Just found the reply from APHA, it was on WC;


Thank you for your enquiry. It may be possible for you to obtain an EU issued passport for future travel but this would be at the discretion of the EU vet. You will need an AHC to travel to the EU before a passport is issued.

I probably should be able to get a new copy of the original Spanish passport but maybe more bother than it is worth
Fortunately Spanish vets are incredibly cheap . Just need to get there !

Just to say once you have a European pet passport you need to get the rabies bit done every year in Europe or your back to square one.
