Skiing in MH ?

Skiing in MH ?

Are there any other winter tourers ? We are foul weather motorhomers in the main. We live in the Pyrenees and adore winter sports.
we will be off to the Alps next week ( although we have a ton of snow here !) ....to Legrand Bornand.

anyone else go skiing with motorhome ? Would be nice to share info etc.

Merci

We do! Having a bit of a change this year - instead of visiting several ski areas we're booked in at one place for 6 weeks and have purchased season passes. Planning to be away for about 3 months although within that time we may also head south for a warmer break.

Yes we do with an annual trip 10 day to the French Alpes

though we don’t actually ski with out MH as that is left in the ski lift carpark

Yes another one, mainly Bourg St Maurice in the van.

Been skiing with our van for last 9 years, at least once every year. Lots of experience including a 10night stay where night was -20 and highest daytime was -8, it was a tough week. We love WC but are always on a site while skiing as we normally stay for 8 to 10 nights and it’s just not practical to WC in those conditions for that long. Our view is we are already saving a fortune by going in the van but want to enjoy it as much as possible.

Italian Dolomites is our favourite with a Jan and Feb trip planned for 2018.

If anyone wants any info on the subject just pm me happy to help.

Hi Sal - you know my pedigree on skiing with the motorhome as I believe we have met elsewhere??

Sadly - and despite the huge snowfalls the Alps have been getting - we won't get away until March this season. I'd love to go right now, but following my recent minor stroke I'm waiting on follow ups to happen in January/February which might include some cardiology work so best hang back until I'm fully fit again. But I'll be there in March come hell or high snow!

Glad to hear that FB ?
I know you are a seasoned skier but as it’s a new forum with lots of unknown people it would be nice to get all the snow heads out in the open !
we have had good snow in the Pyrenees and have dusted off the skis nicely .
en route to the alps , will be at Annecy tonight then on to Le GB . No skiing this week as it’s biathlon time but back to free riding after Christmas .
a lot of snow on the massif ...

have find in leGB Sal - been a good few years since I've been there and it's good for XC skiing up the valley although the downhill is a bit underwhelming but OK for a few days combined with some XC.

Anybody else been having problems with the new type (blue controls) Truma frost protection valve dumping all the water, and how do you get around it? My search so far has revealed either leave heater permanently on, even when driving, buying and connecting the Truma frost protection valve heater (£45!!!) or fit a manual one (£25). I have a description of how to take the valve apart and turn it into a manual one. But reluctant to do this as they are £150 if you mess up. Any ideas welcome, and thanks

Itching to get away!! :Emoji_Snowflake_Dow Big buggerance is that our new mh which should have been here in Oct is still in Bad Waldsee being built :mad::mad:. So, we won't have time for a trial run even assuming it arrives in time. Already put the ferry crossing back by a week.

Never (so far) had it dump whilst driving. We have the blue buttons/switches - don't know if there are newer ones - our mh is 2012

Have never bothered with downhill at LeGB. Quite often put in some XC but not this time . We are in rather a hurry tbh . We will leave straight after the last race ...sprint back across France and await the Christmas visitors . Himself has a novice skier to sort out ( he is really happy about that !) and his knee is not great atm ...so a bit of r+r to ensure we are in top form for the freeloaders . Sorry , guests . I meant to say guests ...

Blimey .
that would be driving me nuts .
we bought our bus specifically for biathlon and skiing . Its very well insulated , all tanks and pipes are heated . We did a week at -20 no issues . No buckets or open valves required . Nothing froze except the full cassettes which were stored in an I heated drawer. Oops . But I think off grid in -20 for 7 days is pretty good going . It gets us away from the crowds ?

That is impressive! We've done longer at minus20 , but only on a campsite. The new mh will be better for skiing but if necessary we will take the old one and the dealership will just have to wait until we return to complete the sale.

-20C caused us a few problems last January as some of the pipes close to the side walls froze as did they gray waste. we've had the gray waste tank insulated and a heater fitted but it would be way too much faff and expense to get the pipes replaced by heated ones. easiest solution - avoid the very coldest weather!! and when a manufacturer says a m/h is fully winterised, check out what "fully" means in their parlance. for many it means OK down to -10C but any lower you need additional features

We are off to Switzerland in early january, have 2 months there in the Valais and Fribourg on the "MagicPass" which only cost us £280 for 25 resorts. Hopefully the huge saving on passes will subsidise the rest of the extra expense there.
This will be our 7th trips skiing/snowboarding in the Rapido and we have experienced just about everything the mountains can throw at us from from sliding 20m back down roads, sliding forwards approaching downhill hairpins, multiple nights wildcamping below -20, huge overnight snowfalls to dig out etc etc. It's accurate to say we've been a bit too cocksure on occassion but it's not like we haven't got full winters, chains and all the rest of the gear.

Sharing snow clearance duties earlier this year, Valloire and Bardonechia.

No, that's the same type as the latest one. So I presume you are referring to when driving in minus temperatures that it has not dumped? Is yours in an area where it can get warmth from the driving area? Mine is set right at the back in the garage next to the Truma, so it is not going to get over 4C unless it is switched on, which is the advice I got from Truma.

Ive been going the last few years in the MV with kids, we have been to so many aire's I cant remember them all, we are going to alps on boxing day to Tignes or la Roslere for 8 days
the Andorra in the feb half term pas d Casa cant wait
