SOCKS, do yours last for next to no time?

Up until M&S and other UK retailers stopped buying their socks from UK manufacturers, I never had any problems buying sock that would last a reasonable amount of time.

Coming from Leicestershire there were countless dozens of sock manufacturers some of whom had M&S contracts and I always bought my wool mix day socks from M&S and boy oh boy they lasted and lasted.............. Even today I have several pairs of M&S socks that are still in good condition and all of which are something like 30 years old.

But these days, all the socks appear to be cotton rich, bamboo rich and gaud knows what else rich and, for me at least, they all have one thing in common, they all appear to go into holes in next to no time and yet I am light on my feet and have smooth skin. Only last week I put on a brand new pair of bamboo rich socks that were "designed in Nottingham" but made in Turkey and at the end of the second light day of wear, there were two darned great spuds in the heal areas of both socks!!

So if someone knows of a decent hard wearing long lasting sock, can you please point me in the right direction?

I always wore wool blend socks, but like you, found they become holey very quickly. I started buying walking socks made by Brasher which I wore at work. They are very comfortable for a heavyweight sock, but seemed to shrink with every wash.
About 5 years ago, I bought some lightweight walking socks from Decathlon. They are comfortable and still going strong. I’ve bought other styles from there too, from heavyweight hiking socks to thin lightweights and they all seem to last forever.
I can recommend them.

I find the same problem with socks. So I buy multipacks of identical socks. When one of a pair has a hole it gets thrown away. The odd one gets washed and put back in the sock drawer. This carries on until there are only 2 socks left. When one has a hole in it, they both go in the bin.

Can never understand why my kids have always worn holes in their socks really quickly, mine last for years. I'm still regularly wearing one pair I inherited from my Dad, he died in 1995 so they are at least 25 years old. Same with shoes, I was always buying them new school shoes and trainers. They do seem to make them last a bit longer now they have to pay for them, but son has already got holes in some socks I bought him for Christmas.

I was going to say take them back as not fit for purpose but that's a bit tricky at the moment,

All mine are hand knitted have over the years had a few shop socks given me but usually pass them on following Xmas Ideal knitting for a woman while in van easy to pick up an put down light to carry and a sense of pleasure when you see your man wearing them

Good to know that I'm not the only one who does this.

Before the lockdown we went to a wedding where the only condition was that every men should wear odd socks. I was well sorted.

Must be a man thing... takes me years and years to even wear a thin patch in socks.

All my socks are black so I also do the saving the un-holed one in a pair thing.

However...I have different makes of black socks accumulated over the years with different lengths and in different stages of fade....so whilst I can always pair 2 black socks they are not really a pair!

But I figure nobody can see them so who cares

A couple of mine have finally little holes in the heel after about 10 years so I don’t think that’s bad but have just darned the so they are set for the next 10 years. Saying that I have no problem wearing odd socks, I put my hand in draw and wear what comes out

I’ve had mohair walking boot socks from Crookabeck farm , Patterdale . They are hard wearing and seem to get denser the more times you wash them. Not cheap but do the job well.

Grand, it’s not just me then.

I, well okay SWMBO, bought a pack of five pairs from Tesco on our last visit to town just before lockdown so early March and I think they’ve all gone in the bin now.
