About 50 years ago I got lost in Foggia using a small scale paper map and road signs.

In the end I simply steered by the sun.........it worked out just fine and I drove on.

I like simple .

I had a similar problem in Thessalonica Greece. The trouble was, it was mid day and the sun was directly overhead, so we needed to ask! :D

Navigation? Why bother? One of the best bits about solo motorhoming is that it usually doesn't really matter much where you end up. Just follow the road you're on and see where it goes! (OK, yes, I do also have a satnav for finding aires).
If you don’t know were you’re going, any road will take you there. # George Harrison

Try the fishing net trick at toll booths especially if you have electric windows. Get small fishing net with rod attached to appropriate length. Place note / cash in net. Wind window down and extend to guy in booth. Wait for change back in net, reel in so to speak, then off again.
