That three years went by in a flash

ref the Photo, depending on the age of the photo on your passport, that can be applied automatically to a new Driving Licence so you don't have to supply a photo.

As I pointed out, the benefit is not having to renew every 10 years 😊.
I won't have that benefit for much longer though, I hit the age barrier next year 😕
Downside of having an archaic item like that is it cannot be used as a Photo ID, so (IMO) the benefit is negliable. Used for this purpose far more times than I have renewed the licence, but each to their own ;)

I forgot how small those licences were!
I was at the "wee museum of memories" in Leith last month and took a photo of them :)

All licence here have been a credit card type for many years, there is a papaer bit with it to show any indorsments, think this may be dropped nowdays.

What did King Richard the turd say ?
" A hearse a hearse, my kingdom for a hearse.
Oh dear now having a coffin fit .

From memory, the paper part was only kept until it was possible to look up endorsements on line (see https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence) - and only really needed when hiring a vehicle. Definately defunct now :)

Only just applied and received my Photo Licence and was asked to cut in half and send Paper Licence back to DVLA.

The paper section is still valid and required in N. Ireland as we have a separate licensing dept. Up until a few years ago our vehicle taxation was autonomous as well, but was thrown into the black hole of dvla Swansea.

I was referring to the paper licence that replaced those - the green one that folds out nearly to the size of a newspaper!

ah. I actually remember those now you mention it :)
Did the Photo Licence come out originally in the early to mid 1990's? I have this recollection of being in a meeting at the DVLA in Swansea when there was a discussion about the various data fields that would be included and visible (a lot more than the paper ones IIRC).

I could never have been able to keep a green paper one anyway. I have moved 7 times since the paper ones were superceeded :)

I got my current green paper licence when we moved address in 1998. It may be that some kind of pilot scheme was being run then, but it certainly wasn't compulsory to have the photocard type

been thinking and it could have been early 2000's (the person I went to the DVLA with I worked with at the company I was with then and also was at the company I worked for in the previous decade so a touch confusing trying to recall).
I think it was a meeting about the IT system to service the licences so probably 2000's (I've only moved 5 times since the mid-2000's :) )

For some stupid reason I was ashamed of my red card licence because of the number of endorsements I had picked up, and so I destroyed it. I suspect our boys would have found it funny now. 🤣

But. I was completely outclassed by a lad who was flagged down by the police and booked for a series of offences. The policeman told him that he must now push his bike home. Being smart, the lad pushed his bike round the corner, mounted it and rode on.

Being even smarter the policeman anticipated this, took a short cut, flagged him down and booked him for all the offences all over again. I can't remember how long his ban was for. 😊

No renewal needed for under 70s if you've still got the old paper licence! The last time we moved house was just before the photo licence came in, so we were able get a paper licence with the change of address on it
That's the one I just sent back got the photo one in case we travel to France cos wasn't sure if I would be able to enter Europe without a photo licence .

I still have a paper licence, sadly it runs out this year so I have to have a photo card one. Driven all round France, Spain & Portugal with my paper one. They are still valid so perfectly acceptable in Europe.
