Where do you fit your fire extinguisher?

I posted the photo of my Extingisher before. I have been meaning to get a fireblanket for the van (already have one in the house) as well but never got round to it until this thread reminded me - so arrived today was this chappie - https://amzn.to/31xZtu3 :)

Now of course, having the kit is one thing - knowing HOW to use it correctly is another!

I am saying this as someone who had a kitchen pan set alight, put the fire out by smothering it with a towel (didn't have a fire blanket at the time) and then very carefully carrying the pan ouside (had very little oil in it -if it were a chip pan or more filled, would not have lifted it up) and placed outside. Pretty well the right things done but ..... still ended up with this (scroll down to see) ....

(the little staples are there to keep the skin graft in position)

Because once the fire is out, you must make sure it stays starved of oxygen! I made the mistake of just lifting the edge of the towel to check it was out and that let in enough fresh air for it to flare up and shoot up my hand :(

So get the kit BUT also learn how to use it before you need it, as you won't have time to read the label with flames shooting up next to you

Ouch!
Hope it healed ok.

Happened just before Christmas 2016. Getting there (y) Am expecting to be discharged as an outpatient from the specialist Physio dept in September.
I will always have the evidence visible of my stupidity to remind me what to do if there is a next time ???

I have now moved mine this morning to the rear facing panel at head height to the left of the sliding door as you enter the van ( or exit in a hurry?)
Thanks to all who shared their locations.
Now need to buy a fire blanket after seeing Wildebus post ?

The burnt hand photo above has reminded me to remind owners who have refillable gas, to use gloves.
I do, since reading about a guy in Portugal getting serious burns while refilling.
And as a bonus, you don't transfer gas smells to your steering wheel
I'm not doubting what you are saying, but was this from it igniting or freeze burns? just curious

Most fill up hoses I have used so far have a kind of deflector shield on the nozzle, but I do have a pair of rubberised gloves at the ready. You do get quite a gush from some as you disconnect.

The reasons why so many are dry powder extinguishers are threefold.
1 They have a fantastic knock down rate ie they are very good at putting out fires
2 They are suitable for all types of fire
3 You get quite a bit of extinguisher in a small space
Problem with foam or any other liquid (ie water) based extinguisher is the risk (small but possible) of arcing on electrical fires, CO2 is best for electrical but poor on paper/cardboard and liquid fires. Also a liquid or CO2 extinguisher in that size wouldn't really do a great deal unless you've caught the fire in the very first few seconds.
I used to be a firefighter and fire training person......

That was the same as my brother he used to travel abroad a lot to teach how to put out fires but to be honest I think I would just get out!

Well thanks for posting the link;) I looked at the item and was offered a £10 promotion code if I installed the app. Which I did and I then bought the item for the cost of vat and post alone... Great saving.

Forgot to mention that we also have a fire blanket in the van

We have one that came fitted behind the passenger seat plus I have put one in the back where we sleep. We also have a fire blanket in the kitchen which we keep in the microwave which comes out every time we cook.

Worth also considering whether lack of an extinguisher would give the crafty insurers a "get out"
I agree that early detection is the best option.
Several up-to-date smoke and Co detectors etc., but the best defence is quite possibly the MK 1 Nostril !

The key is to catch early (if you can) when it is small and a CO2 should then do the trick with no mess. If it is inside then a motorhome is a closed space and that will help. If it is too big then flee, if it outside than the powder becomes the best option.

I am not 100% sure now as I have had lots of sleeps since reading about the incident, but I think freeze burns.
I now use rigger gloves
Mind you, I do seem to remember there was a fire at the refilling station.
It was at Praia de Rocha about three years ago
You're right. Our old friend Hughie had a senior moment, didn't switch his fridge off while filling with gas, he told us. The fridge was next to the filler, and chose the moment he released the filler to light up. Cloud of gas + naked flame = BOOM?. Moral: switch off your fridge before filling!

To get back to the thread, last winter Mrs Frogman saw a van fire start: the top fridge vent was flaming. I grabbed the dry powder extinguisher from just inside the habitation door and legged it 30 metres to the fire - two good squirts and it was out. Some smoke-blackening of the side above, no damage to the awning+LEDs. The owners (Frogs!) came back just in time to see the flames before they were extinguished. They were grateful. Still think you should stand back from a fire? One day it could be yours, and someone could save your van/trip/life. It only cost €13 to recharge the extinguisher

Like I said earlier, dry powder is a bit messy but what a knock down rate, I think I'd rather have a bit of cleaning up to do as lose the motorhome.

Fire blanket next to cooker, extinguisher mounted on the end of the cupboard next to the hab door, smoke alarm mounted on the hab area ceiling, carbon monoxide detector fitted opposite extinguisher.
