Who is Ex-Forces on here ?????

I was a Bombardier in the Army Cadet Force.. 1961 to 65.
Fighting the Red menace, from the depths of the cook house. The Ruskies new that I was a first class marksman and could lay a 25 pounder .

That sure kept them honest.

RMP. 1972-1979. Saigon, Singapore, Belize, Berlin. Bit of NI. Joys of a peacetime Army. Rugby, skiing, sub-aqua, cricket and a lot of mountaineering expeditions. Not a lot of soldiering!

Thank you to all for being there to defend us.

I did try to join the RCT in the 60s, but I failed the exam on maths.

I wasn't but a story my dad told was funny. He was in REME chasing Rommel across N. Africa. His small convoy spotted a German tank on the next dune. They quickly jumped out and dad crawled slowly up to the top of the dune, Lee Enfield over his shoulder. He thought to himself "I have carried this ruddy thing all over parade grounds in England, spent 2 months with it on a ship going round South Africa to get here and never fired it in anger" So he shot the German Tank. Ping. A white flag appeared and 6 Germans surrendered. He is probably the only man ever to have captured a German Tank with a Lee Enfield rifle.
The reality was that the tank had broken down, the rest of the tank convoy had deserted them, in true Top Gear fashion, and they were glad to be taken POW by the British.
Later my dad took The Test (for code breaking) and ended up in the Royal Signals intercepting Enigma signals at the front lines and forwarding them to BP. He only told me that three years before he died, and as a result I have been volunteering as a steward at BP.
Not bad for one of seven boys, orphaned when he was a young lad, and volunteered for the Army and started in the kitchens peeling spuds.

I joined the TA in the seventies does that count?
We got a ā€˜report to barracks within 18 hours with full kit’, mobilisation call up during the Falklands.

Plan was we would backfill the Rhine Army initially because obviously the Russians weren’t ever going to represent a threat to Europe…

One surreal form I was given was to send to the building society I had my Mortgage with.
Apparently this formally notified them they weren’t allowed to suspend the life insurance element of my endowment policy!

I can’t imagine why they would have wanted to do that

I was in the RAOC from Sept 77, until it was reformed into RLC with 4 other corps and I left the Army (time done} in March 2001.

I spent most of my Army life in Germarny, 15 years of it and loved every minute of being in Germany, hated it when I had a posting back to UK.

I was glad to get out in 2001, as I could see the changes that was comimg and they were not for the better of the soldier.

Take care everone and enjoy the week (y)(y)
