Over Wintering in Portugal?

Not so sure about that. The 90 day rule has been the case for non-EU countries since Schengen was established in 1995. Everybody knew it would apply to us when we left; the EU showed no interest in changing it and the UK never asked for it to be changed. So I would say that both sides were happy to accept it.
Think I quoted previous posters sentimemnts correctly ? But you may well be right .
Either way we appear to be victims of apathy . I suppose we are such a small minority it would be surprising if we were considered

France will be the problem whatever the rest decide , have you seen the latest on brits driving in France ? briefly Folks [ Brits ] living there must have french driving Licences , Computer says NO NO NO as UK has no reciprocal agreement yet and Brits are being refused French Licences so cannot drive, saw it on the BBC news app this morning, Visitors OK IDPs I guess ?
The French authorities offered a straightforward exchange of UK driving licenses but the UK government would not agree. It appears that negotiations re-commenced last week. There have been major problems with the system the French use for issuing licenses since they centralised the system about 2 or 3 years ago.

It's alway been law that Brits living in France needed a French driving licence and their car to be French registered As for visitors EU countries have already agreed that UK licence is all that needed.

you do not need an IDP to drive in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein if you have a photocard driving licence issued in the UK.

There was a whole bunch of talk about IDP's up to 2019, presumably prior to agreements being reached regarding our withdrawal from the EU. We got them just in case, as in 2019 we were still thinking we would be doing some international travel so thought it better safe than sorry. It is now apparent from this list that for the majority of European countries we don't need one...

A few small exceptions - Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City etc - may catch some folks out though.

I thought we needed an IDP for Europe and I have them, although one has expired. Have things changed?
It changed for definite around when we left UK in December 2020..I got a new annual one ( think that was Spain?) and still had the three year one current. It was very confusing for quite a while as the Gov site did not update and most advice was " get one in case!" . Now much clearer and not needed for most EU countries and Gov.uk states definitive answer now.

No never was needed just a lot of people Panicked when several firms tried to make a fast £ organising them for the public started rumours

At one stage, I am sure we did

My recollection is that the UK Gov website said that you may need them in the event of no deal. When it looked as if there was a possibility we might leave with no deal and no transition period in January 2020, we got them before heading to Spain for the winter but we didn't leave with no deal and the transition period kicked in. We haven't needed them since the deal was done prior to Jan 2021

In 2019 the Gov site said we did need them...which is why I went to the PO and got the main set of three just to be sure.

I read at being definitely required at the time...but we'll not fall out about it :)

As you say a fiver for each one was nowt really.

I bought one too, for a fiver, a free bus ride into a nice town, a pleasant chat with the ladies in the main Post Office, and a beer in a pub, it would have been daft not to.

Its joined my various red driving licences, blue passports, and paperwork from around the world, and will become a piece of family history that our sons will discuss in the years ahead. Those little pieces of paper were how I traced my grandfather's work as he moving around in the States and 'how I tracked both my parents movements throughout WWII.
😊

What a lovely country this is.. The water pump filter needed changing.. a 10 minute job, every 6 months, or so.
It's been getting hard to tighten and seal, the last few times, after 16 years in place.
This time I couldn't get it to seal.
Phoned our Plumber neighbour, Manuel, at 7.30, knowing he is usually just getting home then.
" I'll be straight up, I'm 5 minutes away."
Looked at it, then went home and returned with the appropriate bit.
Usually, he'll look, do a quick fix and return at the weekend and refuses payment for little jobs.
This time he fettled it and joined us for a drink on the terrace.
Told us about some foreign .lady who had spectacularly turned her car over, up in the hills.....
His Gast was well flabbered, when Jenny said it was she..
After a beer and gossip, had to force a 10€ note into his hand , reminding him he hadn't charged us for his 2 previous visits.
All through the Pandemic, nobody he's met or knows already, has caught Covid.
That makes us feel very safe.

The Accident..?
Jenny, hit a patch of gravel, slid into the tapered end of a crash barrier, car rolled over into ditch.
Most efficient rescue operation, 9 hours in Faro Hospital.. Everything scanned, tested and cleared by Neuro and Bone Specialists..
Bruises coming out now
Car?
Probably a write off..
She was lucky.
The car needed a wash, and was due is 3 monthly fuel refil.

Sorry to hear about Jenny, fortunately it was only bruising, it must have been reassuring to get her checked out at the hospital.
As you said on the plus side you won't have to wash the car but it's a bit extreme, especially when you could have had it valeted when you had it serviced 😁.
I know you'll be looking after the child bride but I hope the bruising isn't to painful and she recovers quickly.

Sorry to hear about Jenny's adventure, these things happen but the main thing is she's ok and has been thoroughly checked over by the medics; metal can always be mended or replaced.

ouch hope the bruises soon heal thankfully nothing too serious best wishes

How scarey! Glad Jenny is not badly injured , very lucky by the sounds of things. So you are carless now😱 Hope she recovers soon and you get a decent replacement vehicles very soon. X
