new inverter

got anew 2000w Renology inverter research says their second best after victron almost twice the physical bulk of my cheap chinese one which was rated as 4000/8000w , this unit comes with an AC input kettle type lead ? can’t see the reason for that unless it is to act as a battery charger?..??

It might be that the inverter has a built in Transfer Switch? i.e. If there is AC in, the Inverter AC out comes from the mains rather than the Battery power? that would be a neat feature,

Glad you understand these things, David. I would just have plugged the kettle in and rejoiced in not having to switch the gas on ... 'Steep Learning Curve looming' appears on the horizon ...

hi . we have just bought the same one what battery's are you using my old 3/110ah leisure battery's only work the microwave for 3 minutes . Cheyanne

The Renogy can automatically switch over to Mains Hookup if you ever use it, so taking the loads off the batteries
Strangely despite the gushing fan base in the private sector Victron kit rarely gets used in some high demand commercial installations. I work on many Ambulances I see Victron equipment maybe 10% of the time max.

The most commonly used sub 2kw inverters are Cotek often rebranded as Antares.
Cotek inverters have excellent build quality, run 24*7 often for years and a superior power saving mode.

These inverters have a mains auto changeover feature so that all your sockets connected to the inverter can be powered by the main hook-up if you are on a campsite, then when the hook-up is not available it goes back to battery power for the source. This should be a no-break change like a UPS system for a computer. It is a fantastic addition and I'm fitting a 1000W one in my new Ducato van conversion series on youtube.

hi. i am not going to bother fitting it into the the motorhomes electric system as it has 2 battery's & a 100w solar panel alternating between the engine batt & the hab batt . the inverter & battery's will be a separate system stored in the half garage at the back from 2 / 120w panels with a couple of sockets in the m/h

I would suggest that is not the best way to configure this?
If you install as you suggest, you have the Battery Charger running off the inverter when there is no hookup, which will do nothing other than waste power.
You could say " I only turn the charger on when I have hookup" which is one way to avoid the problem. However .... with the Auto switchover, you could lose EHU without realising and you inadvertantly have that charger on powered by batteries
The other problem you can get with the same scenario is running the Electric Room heater and the Electric Water Boiler off the Inverter as well.

Rather then between the EHU inlet and Consumer Unit, I would have the Inverter coming off one of the Circuits from the CU so you can avoid any risk of the devices you want to only ever work on Hookup (Battery Charger and Electric Room Heater) being fed by the Inverter and have one specific circuit as EHU/Inverter.

If your at Hollingsworth Lake I'll show you my set-up.

hi wildebus . i have not explained myself properly its hard trying to write what's in your head. no the vans battery charger runs the 2 batts in the van only not the ones in the garage they will be charged from the 2 back panels that is where the inverter is which is for outside cooking .
i had my old system that way but the old inverter & battery's wasn't up to the job that's why i am upgrading . the inverter under powered the old leisure battery's died hope this explains things sorry to be a pain .Cheyanne

David, I originally was talking to rugbyken when he queried the kettle type socket and supplied lead and why it is there, and offered to him to see my setup.
My set up works well for me, and what you are suggesting may well be a better/alternative method of wiring the inverter, further investigation may be required. I'm sure I could fit an alarm/buzzer with a relay in the event of external breaker trips.

If it's still relevant . . . I've just bought a 2-ring induction hob from Winfields. Each ring is up to 800w which is a lot lower than most. It works well and is built for using indoors or outdoors. Can supply photo if you want

I can tell you some of the above, assuming it hasn't changed from last September ....
160Ah Lead Carbon + 100Ah Lithium in parallel (via a VSDR Lithium Controller), cabled logically like the battery diagram here. Can't recall if the chargers were updated.

You dont use an inverter to run a charger, solar panels do that directly through a good regulator, no need for an inverter.
