Cheaper LPG!

I admit to being shite at it TBH, I have to Google how to do some stuff.

I get round the 'Oh Dear my underslung gas tank has run out' fear (similar to the fear that electric car drivers have - will I make it home or will I sleep tonight in the car?) by carrying a £20 suitcase gas hob and a few tins of gas. Having found that I can go 4 or 5 days with the gauge on red, I don't think I'll bother with the suitcase gas hob any more.

I bought one of those for the house when the Ukraine war kicked off and we were threatened with power cuts, Liz has to be able to have a cup of tea.

Never used it, but it's nice to have the back up should we need it.

Reminds us of 1973 when there was a shortage of candles. Some enterprising folk rushed off to France and bought van loads of candles and sold them here for 1000% mark up.

I carry one of those in the Motorhome and previously in the campers. used it quite a few times. Following examples come to mind ....
  • Outside instead of cooking in the van
  • At home when had a power cut (all electric cooking in the house)
  • As a heater in the Stripey (all-electric) Camper when the crappy Chinese Diesel heater decided to stop working.
For the cost and convenience, I will always take one with me.

I have no gauge on mine, which is a pain. But a RELIABLE gauge is so pricy, I will just go without! I actually ran out on my driveway about a week after being away on a trip. The Gas heater failed to relight.
My second bottle is a Calor one which I keep as a backup and think that is a handy option, but as empty on the driveway didn't matter running out so just waited until next going out.
That’s exactly our set up too!

It covers all the basics in the UK, and should I hope work when we go to France next year (if we're spared) I need to get the French adaptor at some point, bloody expensive for a bit of turned brass.

Am I the only one who fills the gas tank when we see gas? I have never understood the need for carrying a Calor bottle as well as a refillable. You don't have to run out to refill the tank, so we have never got that low. If we are parked up for a three weeks, we get to the second lowest of 5 LED's. And that is maximum. By that time we should get diesel and gas at the same time. I suppose it is like carrying two condoms..... Always one jump ahead! :devilish::ROFLMAO:(y)

makes sense .... IF you pass places that sells LPG. I don't. The garages that sell Diesel usually don't sell LPG. Try living in the back of beyond and see how you go.

"second lowest of 5 LEDs"? what on earth does that mean?

(yes, I know it means you have an LPG gauge ;) very few people actually do. Their (and my) gauge is 'cooker/heating stopped working')

No, I said as much in my earlier post, but only if I see it on our way, I don't go looking for it, just take the opportunity if it presents itself, however, they are getting more scarce in the UK so the Calor is there just in case and peace of mind, and of course I'm not flash like you ;) ;) I only have a 6kg cylinder.

To be sure , to be sure

For those of you who have one refillible and one Calor how often have you had to use the Calor?
Only asking because I did exactly that for almost four years and never used the Calor so when we went full time I thought I may as well carry a full refillable as carry a full Calor 🤔

Regards,
Del

A second refillable almost doubles the cost of the system, I could have bought two 6kg cylinders, but for £30 I get the same cover.

Now to answer the question with another question .... if the answer is "never", then ok, why bother to even carry a full CALOR bottle? Perfectly good question. BUT in the same way, if "never", why bother to go to the expense of getting a refillable bottle and the pipework needed to go to the fill point if THAT bottle never gets used? (If you didn't ever use the 2nd bottle, doesn't matter what type it is, does it?)

I carry a full CALOR bottle as I have space in the locker to do so, so may as well put the bottle in there instead of leaving it in the shed?

Also I had just bought a new Calor so no use in the garage so it's a spare JIC.

So ... I decided to do a little spreadsheet to see is it actually cheaper going out your way to fill at a cheaper pump :)The Maximum cost that Cheaper station by distance must be to make it worthwhile to make that extra drive
I have never (yet) driven to an lpg filling station and back. I simply top up whenever I pass a station offering lpg at a good price.

It’s easier for me because my 80 litre tank holds several weeks consumption - and I don't use any when not on the road.

I can afford to wait for a better price (ideally when passing near Birmingham)

Of course, this calculation is also walid for deciding how far out of your way to go.

You could also use the same approach for deciding how far it's worth going for cheaper diesel. Indeed, sometimes the cheap diesel is at the same place as the cheap.lpg.

Try that when there is no LPG being offered at ANY price let alone a good one.

With an 80 Litre tank you have much more flexibility.

As I said in Post #18

Indeed, sometimes the cheap diesel is at the same place as the cheap.lpg.
you would be lucky to find a place that sells BOTH diesel and LPG most of the time.
