Ad blue question

Yes but how urgent?
Fuel light gives 100Km
Have you looked in your Manual? Do you have an Adblu gauge or Menu Item that will give an approximation? Do you drive with your right foot pushing through the cab floor? Are you always pushing your payload limit to the max, and then climbing the Pyrenees? All of these factors can make a huge difference to Adblu usage, and hence the safety margin before the vehicle cannot be started. If you know the odometer reading when the Warning Light first appeared, make a note of it and also record the amount of Adblu to refill the Tank. Assuming your driving style/trips are similar, you should have quite an accurate consumption figure to act as a guide for next fill up time

My Hymer has an app that details a large number of items, and adblue is shown as a %age of the 22 litre tank. As I keep detailed records of fuel and Adblue use I know exactly what I have onboard at any time and can add a 10 litre container when I get below 50%. IMG_5353.png

I am on my second AdBlue motorhome and have never seen the warning light. I just fill it up when it gets below 50%. If I didn’t have a gauge I would top up every 2000 miles.

A lot of vans don't have a gauge just an alert when low ,some have a light others. Display a message on hLD

Well an option is this: do you know what size the tank is, it will be available to you to check somewhere.

Fill it.

Drive 1000 miles and refill it once more. How much did you put in? Divide mileage by litres used to determine how far a litre will take you.

Then multiply that mileage by the qty in litres the tank will hold. You will now have enough info to figure out how much you need to put in, or when to use a full 5 or 10 litre container of it dependant on your journey mileage.

@sydnsue
First rtfm!
Then fill accordingly the stuff is dirt cheap, many vehicles need the tank completely filled in order for the ultrasonics to correctly detect the levels and reset the counter etc so as I said rtfm!

My Crafter holds around 25l and has a very specific method of filling.

I didn't know that! How does topping up stop the pdf becoming crystallised ? I'm not doubting what you are saying but would like to understand how. I only get 1500mls or so each fill.
We used to be horrified at how quickly we used addblue, then I started to insist that we drove at 55 - 60 mph in order to use less fuel, our mpg went way up and our use of addblue went way down!!

Just to add, my Crafter was off the road for nearly four years whilst I converted it.

The adblue tank was around 50% full all that time, it never crystallised and drained down perfectly ok when I dropped it out of the way to fit the shower waste. The only crystallisation that normally occurs is from spills around the filler neck and occasionally around the injector nozzle and port into the exhaust. The latter being a relatively common fault but usually quite easy to remove and clean

What about us with geriatric 'vans, should we wee in the tank ? " AdBlue is made from a urea and water solution "

Coincidently, I posted a question about adblue a few days ago. On our 2017 Peugeot Boxer the warning light came on as I tried to switch the cruise control on. It was too much of a coincidence to not be related. We back home now and I tried putting more Adblue in, but less than a litre before it started spilling out. Warning still coming on. I have only done about 700 miles since I bought the van for converting last December, so maybe that is part of the problem. Need to sort it soon. Don't want it not starting just because of Adblue fault.

It will start counting down on the dash display normally when the adblue level starts to drop .
Not long back our work van flagged up adblue fault on the dash
(second van we've had this happen on ...first was a boxer most recent on a relay )
Back into local independent for new adblue pump ...
He says it's a very common thing ...crystals form and block the breather on the tank leading to the pump straining due to the vacuum formed and basically burning the pump out .

Hmm maybe the ad blue warning light should be re-named to something like "just kidding" or "It'll be fine"

Tank size on 2019 2ltr.
Citroen Relay is 14ltr.
Range...6,000 mile when new.....approx.4,000 mile now.

Thanks for the info. mistericeman and Livotlout. (Strange names you lot have, :))
I have not had an Adblue countdown come up on my display. It just said check Adblue and then check engine and the engine management light came on. Still doing the same, but feel a bit safer now at home.

I actually have no idea what my Crafter will do when the tank gets low, so have decided to wait and see, prior to leaving for the Orkney trip it was probably around 50% full. Many miles later still waiting for something to happen!

the motoring chemical industry companies are producing anti crystallising additives.

Any thoughts on these additives ?

Eg

Wynns Ad-Protect Ad-Blue Crystallisation Preventer

Wynn's Crystal Clean & Protect Car AdBlue Preventative Crystallisation Cleaner Additive

FORTE ADBLUE Exhaust Crystal Preventer Reducer

LIQUI MOLY DEF ADBLUE ANTI CRYSTAL ADDITIVE

Or

TOTAL CLEARNOX ready mixed with anti crystallising additives
