France bordeaux

Chateau Vauban at Blaye, north side of the Gironde about 10km from Bordeaux. If you go make sure you book the Sunday midday meal. Excellent food and loads of wine and it costs peanuts in the hope that you will buy a few cases of their excellent wine!

We used Camping Beau Soleil at Gradignan when we were caravanning. It's an easy approach from the autoroute when travelling north, bit of a PITA on the southbound leg, involving the joys of the inner Ring Road. Just under €19pn in March 2020. Toilets and showers immaculate and warm! About 1 mile stroll to Gradignan shops, including a great (but quite expensive) artisan bakery. Couple of popular restaurants within 350m of the site entrance

Another vote for the Autocaravan site at Blaye adjacent the castle walls. It's the place to catch the ferry over to superb campsites around the posh beaches around Hourtin.

Incredible to think the "Cockleshell Heroes" paddled up that river into the port of Bordeaux. It was the first film my father took me to see, all those many years ago.

We stayed at Camping du Lac again this year but will probably try Steve's recommendation above, next year.

My reply on WC for any non members of that site...

We stayed here [Camping du Lac] in January this year on our way down to Spain. Not ACSI anymore since Yelloh took them over but the same price per night anyway (19.50€ per night). No need to book as there is always room. No money has been spent on the pitches so still muddy but they are currently doing up the shower block...which wasn't too shabby to my mind anyway. Restaurant was closed for the winter which is new since Yelloh took over as it was always open on our previous visits.

I forgot to mention: the site at Du Lac has a bus stop outside which takes you to the ram into Bordeaux city or there is a cycle route all the way in (c.8km).

another + for the citadel at Blaye but just realised i’ve booked my ferry from bilboa and Blaye wine festival is on 2-3april it’s a fantastic event i’ve managed to attend 3 times your ticket an engraved glass allows you to sample wines from 80 different vineyards all on stalls within the citadel it’s on for about 3 days , various events included in the ticket including a cruise round the estuary train ride etc think the tickets last time were €5 fantastic

South of Bordeaux, I've stayed on the free aire at Cadillac, https://www.campingcar-infos.com/Francais/cci.php?numero=341 Pleasant small town on the Garonne.
North of Bordeaux, in addition to Blaye and Blanquefort (see my post on WildCamping), there are aires at Cubzac-les-Ponts (no services) and Saint-Romain-la-Virvée (with services).
Numerous good wilding locations west of Bordeaux on the Atlantic coast and aires on the Bassin d'Arcachon and by the lake at Sanguinet (see WildCamping location app for all these).

If you've not been then a tour up the Dordogne would be an option, starting with a night at our favourite Monbazillac rexcomended by Meg.

Of course, that should read ...has a bus stop outside to take you to the tram into Bordeaux :D

...and not some interesting new caprine tourist thing!

Is there somewhere to stay for the Blaye festival ? It might just fit in our schedule!

There are a few potential locations in Blaye. I don't know how busy they would be during the festival. Other possibilities in the area if you were prepared to drive in for the day. l like no. 6174 at Cars: pleasant location, basic facilities, friendly proprietor. But if driving is out you could always consider the aire at Lamarque and get the ferry over as foot passengers.
See https://www.campingcar-infos.com/Francais/cci.php?pays=FRANCE and click on département 33 to view potential locations.

Hiya the Laird,
Where have you gotten?
We are headed that way as The Rain in Spain falls mainly on the Plain is not true.
We are just south of France at Aines, heading into the Pyrenees tomorrow.

Glad to read the good suggestions, makes it easier for me to decide.

So is the sun out in Bordeaux? The weather radar suggests it will be today - bloody better be true after the effort we have done from La Marina since Sunday.

Hope to meet for a casual chat.
Stan & Bernie
