There is nowt the matter with the matrix or the pipes it's the O rings in them that's started to leak.

If not too late check the electrical connector for the fan speed. Both my 08 relay and son's 2010 ducato had started to melt. Easy to do with the dash apart like you had

It was done a few years ago mine is a 2009 relay a new harness and the speed thingy lololol

Well that's the pipes fitted onto the new matrix new O rings as well .Looks like it all going back together tomorrow fingers crossed we don't end up with a rattling dash lolol

Only ever worked on a heater to that extent once and it was a burst matrix on a V6 Vectra for me. Had a bit more dash left than you have there but was a lot of taking apart. I did have the replacement matrix before we started and it was all done in a long day. You old feckers

I was going to try to write something really clever. Then I realised that it could end up biting my bum.

Reminds me of when I had to remove my VW T5 dash ....

Why? to fix a heater vent actuator that had a tiny bit of plastic broke off!

(I just used a wood screw for the head to take the place of the broken plastic secure the end cable ball )

It is generally not really such a bad job to remove the dash. Scariest bit is removing the steering wheel and airbag!
And sometimes you have to know where the 'Jesus' nut is. In the case of the VW Transporters it is in the engine bay and so called as a nut that keeps the dash secured and after many hours you find it and say "Jesus, that is what was stopping it coming off "

As its the o-rings that have failed, could the problem be incorrect coolant being used previoisly? Red instead of blue (or other way around), OAT ? Make sure there's no corrosion on the o-ring seats before reassembly.

Good idea to put a bottle of bars leak/radweld in when refilling the cooling sys.

A few years back, at my local garage, there was a car with the dash all out like that.

It looked like a job that cost more than the car was worth, so I asked what it was for.

Seems the owner had lost her engagement ring and was sure it had fallen into the heater vent.

He took it all out, and was taking the heater apart.

A day or so later I went back to pick my car up and I asked what happened.

He had put it all together again, but hadn't found the missing ring.

I didn't think to ask whether her insurance was paying for the search or for the loss.

Since then he sold his garage business to spend more time in his motorhome, so I've not had another chance to find out.

Rememember folks, be nosy at the time. You may not get a second chance.
