How Safe are our vehicles, in particular EVs?

Makes you think twice about getting on the Train to go to France as well as more Elec Vehicles are about....saw an Elec car set on fire being charged at a Race meet last w/end destroyed the whole Teams Kit.

The Chunnel don't seem to be bothered by the risk, and they don't even ask about Lithium Batteries [and they do transport n number of HGVs that are carrying hazardous substances every day, Sundays included]

And, in the case of CalMac Ferries, if EVs are banned, the drivers of ICE vehicles gubbed, because they won't be allowed to drive in Glasgow's LEZ ... No joined up thinking, but perhaps policy produced after a Joint ...

Not great if you are in the same section as one though

It seems that EVs are becoming a problem on ships and ferries by catching ire, is it time to ban them?

No it’s not time to ban them. Given the number of crossings each day the chances of this happening on the one you are on are very slim indeed. It’s rather like saying a pedestrian was hit by a car so let’s ban cars. I cannot, will not live in fear of the next event expecting disaster at every turn. If you are that concerned you could always mount a protest at the ports, sit in the road with a banner. You’d be bloody lonely though.

Just because the odds are slim doesn't mean it can't or won't happen, the video was of a car transporter so I assume brand new cars, the ones on a ferry will be used cars with god knows who tampering with them since new.

In which case, Kev, perhaps the title of this Thread should be, 'How Safe are our vehicles, in particular EVs?' ...

I doubt the ordinary man/woman on the street will have the skills and knowledge to "tamper" with an EV. First of all, specially insulated tools are required to prevent mechanic suffering electric shock which would end with his/her death. Edinburgh College have experts within motor vehicle dept who train combustion engine mechanics to work on EV's safely, there are no courses ran for the DIY'er.

I would bet money that there are smartarses out there who think they can modify them to go faster or use less energy.

EV have fast and slow modes built in, called ECO mode, where the vehicle will use less energy, thus allowing to to gain more miles. ECO off, one can go as fast as vehicle can, albeit more energy used = less miles.

I imagine they would let you into the next carriage before closing the fire door.

Maybe 🤣
There are pedestrian doors between each carriage too , with air locks ,and the main doors each end of the carriages are always closed when the train moving , or that is how its been each time we used the train . and lorries always go on the cargo trains on open bogies not the general car and Motorhome ,Coaches. trains ,
And there are escape tunnels all the way through the tunnels too, be a long walk or run though hee hee
