The French don't fart about do they

Another reason why I would always avoid France whenever possible. Bunch of *******

We booked our return crossing from Santander a couple of days ago because of the French farmers and their industrial (in)action. I was caught up in the first gilets jaunes demonstration, which was quite intimidating, but I had the sense not to indulge in any verbal exchanges; unlike a Swede who had his new Gin Palace leviathan nearside door kicked in when his wife leaned out of the window to share some thoughts ...

Spain is warmer and more accommodating. Just a pity that the Ferry fare goes to a French company, rather than a Spanish one

I lived over there for nearly 20 years and soon learned that people have a lot of power and are perfectly entitled to close an airport, as they did in once when I was trying to fly out of Bergerac. They mayor even came down to persuade 200 angry travellers why it was that hairy red nosed men had blocked the ramp and that it was our duty not to fly and go home. Even the police stood at the top of the ramp behind them and did nothing. The plane landed and the exchanges got hotter. Being unimpressed with this and because I’m able, I straddled the barrier just out of sight of most of the French, reached up to the top of the ramp where the policeman stood watching, pulled myself up but was halted mid pull-up by a red faced French fella hanging off my trailing leg shouting expletives. Again, because I’m able I released myself, climbed over and stood next to the policeman minus one shoe which was being brandished threateningly by the French fella whereup the policeman instructed him to return it to me. The nice policeman smiled and said the plane awaits. This incensed those on the French barricade and the angry travellers started literally throwing me their luggage over the heads of the protesters with whom I had to play tug of war to get it up and over the ramp barriers. I stacked it all inside the waiting room and watched as the muscle of the travelling public started to overcome those on the barricade. At this point the policeman recognised that violence was about to ensue and that the will of the majority should prevail, so with a very loud voice he commanded that all stop and the barricade be removed and people be let on their way. This they did and peace was restored and we got on the plane and left on time. All this apparently made the papers. All over the fact that the airport owners closed the old cafe for restoration and did so without notice after consultation was turned down by the union. Exciting times !

Reminds me of the prison protesters here, when they were deprived of their electric blankets and fresh cream with their croissants who 'dirtied' their cells. I would have just left them there to stew in it and let them clean the cells when they couldn't stand it any more. Instead we moved them to better centrally heated single cells with Sky TV, interior sprung mattresses, self flushing toilet with warmed seat and a valet to tidy up and make the bed.
That last bit might be a bit of an exaggeration, but not totally because I have worked in a couple of prisons and so far as I could see they had a better standard of living than I had when I was unemployed for 18 months. They had central heating that wasn't allowed to go below 18 C, satellite TV, tea and coffee making, etc etc etc. And their own personal fitness trainer in the gym, four large meals a day and so on.

There is a thread on Facts along the same lines, I'm in favour of it being much tougher on inmates, not cruel etc but if it's like a holiday came where is the reason to go straight.

Compulsory lessons in education and trades would help them have more choices on release.

While I was working in Winchester it was the day that Freddie was released.
"Come on Fred, out you go, your Time's up."
'Can't I stay, I don't want to go'
"No, you've done your time, go and collect your £50 and go to the job centre in town"
Freddie collected his £50 (going-out present they all got at the time, probably £200 by now). He went down to the market and bought a cucumber with a bend in it, in a brown paper bag. He went to the post office, pointed the bag with the cucumber at the cashier and said hand over the cash. Cashier pressed the alarm button. Freddie went over to the entrance and leaned nonchalantly on the door post waiting for the Police. They came and took him away - whether straight back to jail, or perhaps to a police station cell. I don't know.

Compulsory education wouldn't work - most of them are illiterate and the reason they are is that when they did occasionally go to school, they had no interest in learning anything so they are incapable. Also they certainly get institutionalised - they don't know how to live outside of an institution.

There will always be some who can't/won't conform but some will so the opportunity needs to be there.

That is indeed true, Pudsey. A lady curate at our church works in a prison and tells us of the reading and writing classes that some prisoners attend. It is voluntary of course.

Stupid people rear stupid kids, not the best start in life, parents too young, no lie experience, it doesn't always follow of course that they will end up wrong uns but educated kids from good families have a better chance.

Something went wrong with my two, law abiding and successful kids then! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :devilish:

'Educated kids from good families have a better chance' because there is an assumption that they are better, irrespective of their actual abilities. And, once through the door, the richer kids have the education, guile and connections to conceal their lack of ability. This is borne out by recent research from the Oxbridge Uni admission interviews, and backed up by Peter Capaldi's experience in battling through the Arts World and then the Acting Fraternity (Guardian some 2-3 weeks ago) where his comments about the Acting Families, where the latest generation get by on the family name, rather than on ability were quite acerbic. Ironically, he auditioned for the Malcolm Tucker role whilst still raging about the latest Beeb rejection, so the sweaty rant came through on Weegie Autopilot rant as he replayed the Beeb rejection in his mind ...

You will definitely need to be avoiding Germany and Belgium if you think it’s bad in France at the moment 😂😂😂

Conform, hmmm. Are we not supposed to be free men and women living in a free country? Too many folks conforming without questions what to is more a problem than those who don’t I think.

That is a statement in general and not for anyone found guilty of crime and being punished 👍

Bear in mind that heads of big businesses and people in charge of running almost every sector of government are mainly these educated kids from good families. I don’t see what it should matter what or where the family is or is from, if the child shows ability they should be educated. During my working life I constantly clashed with so called better educated folks from better backgrounds. The fact you can recall something you read certainly does not mean they could implement or even understand it. Some of the stupidest people I have met had at least a first class degree 😂😂😂
