It's not too shabby for a past country retreat, now NT, and is today mainly an art gallery with lovely (steep) grounds. The gardeners are volunteers, which is why they mostly seemed to enjoy chatting to punters, like us. The famous past owner was Lord Bearsted who founded Shell - pretty impressive for a family that came from London's East End and started out flogging wooden boxes covered in sea shells.

Lovely stroll sound saintes on the way north to a chateaux, free parking before going on to Rochefort tomorrow
