Apologies if this is the wrong forum
Trying to renew licence I wanted to ask the over 70s if you had to have a medical to keep your Grandfather rights? My van Leo is only 3.4 so I don't think I need the C1; it's more a case of not wanting to let it go.
Any help gratefully received. Thanks

If you want to retain your C1 category, you will have to have a D4 medical when you reach 70 and every three years after that. If you only want to drive vehicles below 3.5 tonnes then you still have to renew every three years but you don't need a medical and can renew online.

Make sure you keep your motorcycle entitlement. I renewed using a Post Office form the first time and photo copied my old paper licence until the new photo one came through with my up to 3500 and my bike licences on it. After that it’s the three year renewal period just to make sure you know you are getting older…..

You have to decide if you really want the C1 keeping it just for the sake of not losing it will be expensive medicals don't come cheap and you'll need one every 3 years

Not sure if this is of any use:
👍 I don’t suppose for a minute I’ll ever need a C1 again. But if I did, this is the way I’d do it. Local Doctors charged a small fortune, these people charge about £40 , make sure you have a pulse and fill out the D4 form. Job done.
TBH, do you want more?

Thanks for tips.
The C1 will have to go I think. Now the grandchildren are teenagers I have no need for a van with a lot of bedding space. Also Covid has brought home how little I manage to get out because of comittments so buses aren't for me

Presume there is something stricter for heavier vehicles ?
Think the driver of the Glasgow bin lorry had a pulse ?

It's the same medical. But for LGV licences, the DVLA could insist on further tests. Treadmill, heart scan and the like. At their expense ,although a few years ago, I was presented at the hospital with a bill for £430. Sent on to DVLA , heard nothing more.

Their blurb says £55 & probably Vat on top, what’s the going rate from the average GP?

I think my GP charged about £170. Boots Opticians did the eye assessment and form filling for free.
Next time I'll probably try the organisation that xsilvergs has highlighted above. They conduct medicals about 10km from my house.

Colin 🙂🙂🙂

I paid about £40, but incurred £100 parking fine from Holiday Inn. Had a word in their ear. Almost had an apology.

Local GP Med cost £105. Decided I wanted to keep my entitlements. Specsavers filled in the form following a quick check of my previous prescription and charged £10. GP completed the form at the medical and told me no problems envisaged. Optician said all was ok.
Now we come to the worrying bit.....licence due renewal second week in July, application etc sent off in April, STILL WAITING!
Sent via local Post Office and informed by them that no sense in sending either Signed For or Tracked because for some reason he had been told that DVLA weren't signing for deliveries! All I could get was a Proof of Posting Receipt! In order to ascertain if DVLA have my application I waited the advised 8 weeks. Since the passing of the 8 weeks, 3 phone calls have been a waste of time (nobody available due to Covid and Industrial Action). I then used the DVLA site to send an email to them, just to ask if they had my application, and I got the usual automated response saying they had my query and would get back to me within 3 to 5 working days. A week later I got the second automated response saying that they were sorry but so very busy they would get back to me as soon as possible and that phoning them would not be useful - 6 working days later and still no answer to my original email.
I have been advised that I can still drive all classes as shown on the photocopy of my original licence whilst my application is "under process" - but best to have copies of the application/med and opticians form/licence in case I get stopped. Problem is that the adviser had no personal experience of this kind of situation. My next step is to contact the police and get their angle on the legalities of driving on an expired licence whilst waiting for renewal. Ditto my insurance company. Updates to follow!

Forgot to mention that I have read the DVLA form INF188/6 "Can I drive whilst my application is with DVLA" and each scenario they quote begins with As soon as the DVLA receives your correct and complete application.....but how the hell do I know if they have recieved it because I am unable to check this?

Filled in form on line Monday, new licence arrived Thursday but this was the 2nd renewal. Easy Peasy.
You can't renew C1 on line, you have to do it on paper accompanied by a D4 medical form. Unfortunately, you're comparing apples and oranges...
