So after spending time with Edina at a beach location and watching him and others fishing mainly for mackerel I have decided to buy a rod and give it a go, mainly beach fishing so as a complete novice I thought I’d start a thread for advice tips great places to fish any help and advice would be gratefully received.

I got into fishing to get close to a girl, when we split up I binned the fishing gear, I found it more interesting to watch than to do, and went back to motorcycling.

Does that mean you are going to take someone with you to get the fish off the hook Annie? Caz says she used to fish but I haven’t seen her although we always have stuff in the van ‘just in case’. I don’t, didnt like putting the maggots and worms on the hooks and certainly wouldn’t take a fish of& never mind eat it :)

I stick to ready prepared but do know lots of folks get great pleasure from it, I could do the sitting about next to water in solitude bit if I left the rods and tackle behind :)

I ca catch take off the hook, descale, gut and fillet the bit I have a struggle with is killing them last live fish I had Hippy hit it with a wine bottle to kill it and that was a sea bass at Shell island.

Killing mackerel, trout etc is very quick and easy by breaking it's neck - finger in it's mouth, thumb at the back of it's head and pull the head up and back; that way is instant and far kinder than leaving them flapping about in a bucket as some do.

Yes that was lesson number one on Saturday I even passed it on to another guy fishing I sounded like a fountain of fishing knowledge when I told him ??

I used to coarse fish when I was a lad and this thread has inspired me to try fishing again. I've just sorted out a small telescopic rod and reel but can't find any of the bits that go on the sharp end. I'll be OK choosing coarse fishing floats, hooks etc but would really like to try spinning (both coarse and beach).
I'd really appreciate advice on what strength line I should get and typical fittings for the sharp end (trace, spinner etc.).
I'll bring what I have to Henley if anyone can help me there.
Finally, I know I'll need a licence for coarse fishing but will I need one for beach fishing?
Thanks guys.

So much to learn, so little time......

Join us late September for a beach fishing training I’m sure it will be fun.

No licence for beach fishing in this country.
For spinning I use 20lb braid mainline with about a metre of 15lb fluorocarbon with a link swivel to attach the spinner/lure.
A good all round lure/spinner is a 'dexter wedge' in a weight to suit the rod, I use a 28gm with my 10' spinning rod which is rated at 20 to 80gm.
Feathers are a popular way of catching mackerel and come in umpteen variations, but a 3 feather trace with a 45 gm lead is about right for me. (get 3 fish on that and you know why 3 is enough!)
If you get this way in the next few weeks, let me know and we can have a trip out.

Some fish, notably mackerel, will almost certainly die anyway if they've been handled.
Use barbless hooks and shake them off without touching them if you've reached your quota.
I could never actually do that I think when I do start fishing once I have what I can eat I will stop I don’t like this stick a hook in a fish and chuck it back wounded that’s not sport that’s barbaric.

Thank you very much indeed for all that information, Chris. I visited a local anglers shop yesterday and had a chat to the guys there but (this being a long way inland) they were really fresh water fishers. They showed me a sea rod and reel but I think that I'll wait and have a talk and/or tutorial from an expert before jumping in. The ebay link that you included in an earlier post is to a shop just 30km from Henley so I may just cycle over to them and black my nose at the weekend.
I really appreciate your offer of a tutorial and next time I'm down towards CTL I'll make contact.

27 mackerel caught 1Garfish released 1mackerel had a bid for freedom and won.

Wow! That's impressive, Annie. I'm really looking forward to your 'catch of the day ' at Henley!
I'd appreciate my mackerel(s) baked or grilled served with mustard sauce. If you could crisp the mackerel, I'm happy to crack on with the mustard sauce. Or in view of your exceptional contribution, I'm happy to clean, cook and sauce the mackerel.
Don't dilly-dally .

If only young man but I will not be at the Henley meet I am going to a wild festival with Sue flyby carol and few others but if you could post the recipe for the sauce I am sure the festival goers will appreciate it . ??

I make a standard white sauce using flour, butter and milk (the usual method of combining butter and flour then adding milk little by little) and at the final stage add English mustard to taste. I love mustard but I don't overdo it lest it overpowers the mackerel.
Mackerel is probably my favourite fish and in my view is much underrated by the general public - my mouth is watering whilst typing this!
Enjoy. I'm jealous.

Colin ???
