Cruising Speed?

What do folk reckon to be a good cruising speed?

I ask this because we nursed the van home from Hollingworth Lake with leaky power steering so toddled on at 50 mph and found it quite relaxing. Fifty could be the new sixty five.

At the start of the green band or right in the middle, most cars/vans are set to be best at 56mph, all depends on the gearing, i had to change back axle to sort mine out.

Yours must have the 2.8 jtd with 5 speed box I wold think.

With that setup I used to travel at 56 mph and hopefully get a tow behind a big bodied HGV. Saved me a fair bit of diesel over the years. :D

I agree about driving to the revs and not the speedo, 2000 to 2,200 rpm was my ideal cruising regime.

Yup, the rev counter is king with me also. Ours does 55 or so at 2000 rpm.

57mph for us on duals/MWays. Enough to make progress; have one eye on fuel consumption; and get past lorries.

We are limited to 50mph on single carriageways due to our weight.

Sub 2k on the revs usually on motorways, ours only has the 5 speed box for some reason but it's fine, I tend to do a couple of MPH faster than the trucks so I'm not hindering them (cept the Irish nutters) on smaller roads I'm happy trunding at 30 - 40.

At 50mph on a motorway you will be holding up HGVs and forcing them all out to overtake. I don’t find this at all relaxing. I find 56/60mph more comfortable. Sometimes I will pick an HGV that is making steady progress both up and down hill and match my speed to that lorry, at a safe distance.

2100rpm on motorway, although the engine is still loosening up. This trip, I opened the throttle a little more as climbs approached, and raised the ante to 2350rpm, saving gear changes and virtually unchanged fuel consumption

I do understand the 90k/56mph thing with HGV’s but I find that running at that speed often hinders them more than running that wee bit below the limiter setting allows the drivers to have that bit of leeway.

Can’t remember the last time I got the air horn/headlight treatment. Most problems are caused by folk not reading the road and giving the big fellas the opportunity to move from one to two in a timely manner. That causes the biggest grief for drivers, especially on an upward gradient.

Trucks are worse on A roads, they just do what they like a lot of the time and ignore the speed limits entirely.

Subject to road conditions and no lower speed limits, I normally cruise at 90km/h, with rpm around 2000 for a compromise between driving time and fuel economy. 80km/h would give greater fuel economy but also greater boredom, which can be hazardous. :)

At 56 mph my van is middle of the green econ reves which is 2500rpm, still think i could up gear a tad more.
