What did you do to your van today?

I was told put cup full of white wine vinegar and enough water to fill boiler.
Heat it up leave 2 hr then empty .rinse rinse rinse.
I think the guy was joking.
White vinegar is used for cleaning water systems so maybe not 👍

Apparently not joking! I had seen a Thread elsewhere where people had used White Wine Vinegar and Cider Vinegar, apparently without problems [other than leaving the Van stinking like a chippie for a day or so ...], but other replies suggested that this could damage seals, and possibly even pipework. So, I still have 4 x 250ml bottles of Cider Vinegar unused but am glad that I used the CleanTabs DScale for the waterheater descale.

I haven't used the Van since the descaling because of Winter, health problems and our flat being flooded, so the success, or otherwise, of the water heater declagging and the sterilisation of the freshwater tank has yet to be confirmed, At this rate, it'll be time to repeat the exercise!

Hi Jeff,

I used Puritabs Descaling Solution [DScale] from Cleantabs, link Waterheater Descale, having checked with them that it would be a safe product [01728 603990 or info@cleantabs.co.uk] I ran the descaler solution to all taps and the shower head, because there was no evidence that the heater had ever been treated in its 6 years life. IIRC, I heated the water for about 30 mins or so to get the temperature to 60 degrees, and then left it for about a further 1/2 hour after switching the heater off to allow the residual heat to raise the water temperature to 70 degrees and then left the solution to do its work [I think I posted details at the time; I know I sterilised the freshwater tank weekend 1 and did the descaling the following weekend, so I'm in danger of mixing the processes together]! I remember that it took about 30 minutes to flush all taps and the showerhead through to remove all traces of the descaler, although I was being very cautious, bearing in mind that the family jewels would be using the shower and I didn't want to risk acid based products on them!

Let me leave this post here for now, as a starter,Jeff, and I'll try to find my original post on the processes. I'll either edit this post, or, if I miss the deadline for alterations, I post a further reply, linking back to this post [hope that makes sense!]

Finished off the Water Heater and Taps descale. Mild panic when there was no initial rush of spluttering air and water at any of the taps or at the shower head. but a further 25 litres of water into the tank solved the problem. Leaving the water. warmed to 'Eco' setting in the system for a wee while to try to pick up any residual bits of calcium on the final flush as well as washing clear any residues of the acid solution used to descale ...
''Warning! Wear gloves when using the solution and avoid contact with skin, wash copiously with water' etc etc. Then use the system to wash your hands or have a shower ... :oops:

EDIT 2 from 12 Nov 22 Post 24 Motorhome Electrical Questions: Mr Laird

Been burning some lpg this morning to warm the water in the water heater as the preliminary to descaling the Truma and the shower/taps. Using the Puriclean DScale and checked with their Technical Staff that hot water makes the descaling more effective, but no need to keep the heat on once the boiler is warm. Need to leave the system for at least another hour before flushing with cold water (2 more hours would be better. but daylight will be gone by then!)

EDIT 2 needs to be read before EDIT 1 to get the sequencing right

Defo white vinegar Jeff you will getlittle blue scale deposits coming out of the taps so remove and clean the tap covers
Also make sure you rinse it through well otherwise you smell like a chip after every shower 😂😂
 
Took Brunhilde out for a short drive, 21 miles, just about enough to warm the engine up and remove the surface rust from the discs. Reflated the tyres before departure, fronts had lost about 5psi, and rears 4psi over the Winter so not too bad. The AMT12 Battery Conditioner showed its worth again; immediately after running the compressor tyre inflator, the VB was 13.04v and the LB 13.73v, with the latter set to feed current to the VB almost constantly

First journey since just before my health problems, so Driver and M/Home better for the experience :D. Hospital appointments stacking up, including the 72 hour electrocardiograph that takes ECGs at preset intervals; only problem is when it starts up for the 3am measurement. Being woken from deep sleep scares one to death and throws a spike on the ECG chart ... A gentle voice message, 'Your ECG scan will start in 20 seconds, so relax', might prove beneficial ...

Rough measure suggests that I must be getting better; I'm moaning more regularly again ... :rolleyes: The miserable old sod is back!

When I fitted the air assist on the rear suspension before I removed anything I placed a piece of masking tape by each rear wheel and marked a given size. After the air suspension was fitted and running at 0.5 bar there was a height increase of 20mm recommended running pressure when loaded 2bar giving a total increase of 35mm making it look like a freekin hotrod.
Spoke to VB about rectifying this they suggested fitting their uprated front coil springs so checking their Web and looking for suppliers tried a few, one would only supply and fit £900 ish another £545 supply only Tried a third, call was diverted to a mobile turns out the lady from the office was stuck in traffic and knew her stuff on suspension and cracking away with her for 15- 20 minutes she said you have brightened up a bad start to my day there is a cheap alternative to vb springs and pointed me in the right direction so have now ordered a set of H/D Kilen coil springs £120.00 vat and delivery included just goes to show, it pays to make people laugh and brighten their day.
 
I went down and tidied the van after doing some woodworking jobs and put my tools out of site, it's going to have new rear lights fitted tomorrow, MOT in a few days if I can get it in somewhere, everywhere is busy.
 
Went mad this afternoon, following on from this morning's drive. Decided to give the M/Home a 'quick wash' to remove the road grime from main road on street parking, but couldn't shift the muck on the Dometic lower fridge vent. Tried to see what was blocking the rh side of the vent, after freeing off the lh side buttons [that were almost seized]; and broke the vent in the bottom rh corner. Managed to superglue it back together, but I have had chance to ask myself why I couldn't have just lived with the muck ... I'll wait a few minutes until I've calmed down before looking for the price of a new fridge vent ... (n) At least I made it to Friday afternoon before launching my winning bid for the 'Wally of the Week' Award [last time it was a Monday ...]

Drove home through rain with a lighter wallet. ☹️

Now she's getting stronger, Yvonne is keen on going away again, as long as I do all the work. 🤣
 
I read on here (I think) about the virtues of "Wet and Forget" on the roof of the motorhome and rushed out to get some 🏎️
Pleased to say that around 5 years later, I finally got round to applying it yesterday 🤡
You're way ahead of me, I've still to buy some. 🙂

Took the van down on Saturday to have new back light fitted, stop/tail and Hi Level, one of the stop tail lights had the wrong internals (Hella) so I have new ones coming to replace, then back to the garage to have them sorted out.

Been down to have new brake pads on the car £70 thanks had disc's and pads fitted less than two years ago.

Must have a sticky caliper there.
I had something similar on my VW T4. Had a record of the pads being replaced just a year earlier and I was getting a "low brake pad" warning light.
On the T4, the wiring for the brake pads actually ages badly, giving false warnings so I ignored it (as pads only a year old). When I got round to looking, found it was real! one pad had worn down to the sensor Not as bad as yours there, but it was a genuine warning.

Kev, if all you had done was replacement pads fitted, keep an eye on them as you may well get the same uneven wear on the new set if it is a sticky caliper.
FWIW, on the aforementioned T4, I decided to just buy new calipers (decided to get both sides) and slider pins to eliminate the problem. Found parts were a very reasonable £53 per caliper and around £10 for a set of slider pins for the pair. Made sense to replace them both at that price and there were no labour costs.
