Italian Gadabout

When we visited, the Sherman was definitely in the town Rog. From memory it was on the main road leading into the town.

The monastery was flattened in WWII and what you will see, should you visit, was almost entirely rebuilt. I'm afraid the various attacks were terrible, and some people consider it to have been a pyrrhic victory.

Cassino has changed massively since I drove through it, but thanks to Google Streetview and a little patience, I've found the Sherman, though not in the original location that I knew.

It's now in Via Enrico de Nicola, at the junction with Piazza Alcide De Gasperi, and it's looking even more rusty than all those many years ago. (It used to be in a more prominent location at a roundabout on the same road about 100 yards SE, now a modern sculpture.)

Tank Location Co-0rds: 41.49260, 13.82978

Yes Rog, except that's the tank in it's new location. Coords in the post above.

I'm sorry, I've allowed my romantic memories of a long forgotten past to get in the way if your excellent thread, and I'll duck out. Sorry again!

Hi Rog

At some stage we might pass you as we are heading for Florence today for 2 nights before heading further south.

Excellent! Sounds like you are having a safe journey. We are still at Cassino at the moment, just killing a bit of time.

Today we bit the bullet, so to speak, and went up the mountain to the monastery or Montecassino to call it by its proper name. Easy drive up and easy drive down, don’t know what we were worried about!
The views from the top were magnificent. We could have overnighted in the carpark, but it wasn’t really level, so decided to come back down again, to the Service Point.0F095D23-9549-4D90-8479-DE932B4F4955.jpegBE58703C-5986-4DCB-8E32-1352521B0085.jpegEF3C5D7C-2B64-4318-B797-DD97902C5E0F.jpegD5861C95-CD8B-4797-8CFE-3807C929C4A7.jpegE2F5E2B4-5508-450C-9BD5-3CE9DE3A1A95.jpeg

TBH everyone, I cannot take the credit for the photos. Chris always carries her iPhone with her, and just snaps away at everything. She then sends the best ones to my iPad and I get to choose which ones go on the forum.
We were talking to a couple from Barcelona last Thursday, and he is an old fashioned photographer, with a tripod and cover that goes over his head, and he specialises in the old style black and white portraits. I would imagine he is very popular for weddings etc.

You are such a crawler (brownie points there mate)

'ark at you lot with your modern Fuji bridge cameras......

I still have my sister's Brownie 125, my posh Brownie 120, (with working flash attachment), my father in law's semi bellows Zeiss Ikon, and my father's 1935 full bellows Kodak. None of which I use other then to keep them in working condition. 🙂

I feel better knowing that you lot are also butting in on Rog's superb thread. 😊
