He is. He drove back the night before last, but he slept at the office because the motor home storage place was locked up for the night. So he was back here about lunchtime yesterday.

I had a ride up into the hills today and came across an almond bush covered in blossom:

The fragrance was really powerful:

And the bees were making the most of the opportunity:

Nobody had bothered to collect last years' almond crop so the nuts nestled amongst the blossom:

It REALLY put a smile on my face.
Sometimes it's the small, unexpected things that make you catch your breath.

Today I cycled up the coast to Vinaroz and on the way back through Benicarló I stumbled upon a wedding. Pretty much everyone including children were in local (Valencian) costume waiting for the bride and groom to appear from their parents' apartment:

*snip*

It was really enjoyable seeing so many people sharing so much happiness.

Martin and I were visiting his sister in Spain a few years back and our visit coincided with the huge Valencian region festival, which we picked up in Denia... I can't think of the name of it now. Hundreds and hundreds of locals in the most amazing traditional costumes, from tiny tots to their great grandparents, paraded through the streets for several hours. I would think some of the costumes cost a king's ransom and it wouldn't surprise me if they were handed down through the generations as heirlooms... just stunning. There were huge papier mache figures on display all over the town too and at night they set fire to them all with the local fire brigade at the ready but still joining in the singing, dancing and liquid celebrations!

Here's one of the many models that were burned that night... must have taken months to make them!

Great photos on both posts, Jennie. What time of the year did you see the festival? Unbeknown to me there was some kind of festival in the local towns over last weekend. I'm about 40 km inside the Valencian Province and saw the remains of public bonfires yesterday. I'm wondering if it's the festival you saw.

My photos are dated 19th March 2014. I just googled and it was called Las Fallas... the bonfire festival. They celebrate it around 15th to 19th March every year in Valencia and in every town in the wider Valencia region. Mind you, with the investment of time and money into the costumes, I'm not surprised that they find other occasions to show them off.
