The nightmare continues.......

Everything crossed for you Rog... makes it very hard to type and do any housework or gardening but I'm battling through on your behalf. No need to thank me, it's the least I can do 💋

Good luck Roger, hope they manage to sort her for you, without it costing you an arm and a leg, it's a blessing the problem occured here and not while you were touring the continent, now that would be a worry, unless you spoke the local language. I hope you are soon back on the road, not that we can escape anywhere yet.

Have you managed to get anybody to assess the situation yet roger ?
Not yet Gordon, it is back at my usual garage now, but they can’t start on her until next week. They are good boys, and are the ones who sorted it last time, so I have a lot of faith in them.
If you honour us with your presence tonight, I will see you then.

Thanks Dave, that’s the only good thing about this, we cannot go anywhere even if we want to, so the garage has a few weeks to get her sorted before I start jumping up and down.

Just been reading the saga of "The Nightmare continues" and what a nightmare it is. Causes so much anguish within when something goes wrong and you just can't work out how to cure the problem. I do hope you get it sorted very soon, especially before we are given the green light to camp overnight.

You say it happened before? I guess on this occasion its not the same cure as last time.

Thanks Nick, it’s not quite the same problem but my garage are familiar with the gearbox, so that’s half the problem. Fingers crossed!

We have a local garage, that has stayed open during the pandemic because it has the contract to MOT ambulances etc. I phoned them up to see if they would MOT Mimi, our Motorhome.
They agreed to test her last Monday at noon. I had some other things to do on Monday, so I took her in about 10am and parked her in a parking spot reserved for MOT.
At noon, the tester drove her into the MOT bay, but as she was going in, the gear selection indicator on the dashboard was going from first to sixth gear randomly. The tester was alarmed, and switched the engine off. They called me, to see if there was a knack in starting her, and I went straight over there to try to start her.
Mimi has a Quickshift gearbox, and I could select every gear except neutral, but couldn’t start the engine.
So there she was, blocking the MOT bay, stuck, I was not flavour of the month.
So far, I have had two people with diagnostic readers, trying to help. One of them, eventually, managed to start the engine in reverse gear, and they were able to back her out into the yard, where she still is now.
The other chap, managed to get her into Neutral, and I have tried many times to turn her over, but when I turn the key absolutely nothing happens. No clicking from a loose battery terminal, no whirring from a dodgy starter motor, no headlight dimming, just silence, apart from my language of course.
She is going for a ride, on the back of a lorry, in the next couple of days, to the chap who fixed her last time this happened, and fingers crossed he can work his magic again. I am also going to suggest the ignition switch, which may be at fault, but that wouldn’t explain the gears jumping up and down. Large black cloud forming over the Roamin household!
Hello Rog.
Just saw your posting. I had a similar problem with my van, except it happened abroad. Took it to a German Mercedes specialist who changed the ignition switch. The van started and it worked for a while but suddenly it happened again. It had not been fixed!! We limped round Europe and did manage to get back. We took it to a UK specialist who found it tricky to diagnose but found the problem.
It turned out to be the relay. A tiny amount of corrosion had formed on 2 contacts in the relay box (often located inside the van) and caused this intermittent starting problem. When the key was turned, absolutely nothing happened. The mechanic changed the relay and it has started ever since.....thank goodness!! So, the enormous bill we paid was a waste of money. The Mercedes specialist in Germany got it totally wrong and we paid the price.
I am not saying this is the problem with your van bu I would investigate the relay. Hope this helps.
David.

Thanks very much for the info, I think the problem is definitely electric or electronic, certainly not mechanical.
Haven’t been over to the garage yet, to see how they are getting on, but I will mention the relay, as something else they could check. It will be something simple I’m sure, but it’s just a question of finding it.

It was the same with my van. They took ages to find the problem when I was back in the UK. The diagnostic was suggesting all sorts of other problems. It was a brilliant mechanic who finally spotted a corroded relay. Good luck with yours.
David
